Has anyone heard of any efforts to do any OSM mapping for areas affected by Hurricane Helene?

Thank you. I checked HOT yesterday and didn't see anything. Of course it takes time for them to get the imagery.

NOAA also often flies post storm aerial imagery, so here's their link for the sets of Helene imagery:

Thanks all. @naefish - I just finished a task in that OSM US Tasking Manager and it was pretty straightforward. I think this is a good place to start.

I just found your contribution and validated it, Rafa. Working with HOT is fun. I remember when we had a mapathon for a hurricane in the Phillipines.

Thanks for contributing! There's also a project covering a different portion of the state and being run in conjunction with NC Emergency Management. https://tasks.openstreetmap.us/projects/495.

This might be a good topic to add to the agenda for the meeting this month - esp. given there is another hurricane heading in.

Thanks for validating that Jeremy!

Disaster Relief Mapping - I'm down for this as a topic 👍 I still need to get the pdxosgeo site live 😬 . Darrell, I may need help figuring out the DNS part to get the CNAME fixed.

Matthew, I'm curious about the NC Emergency Management. Says "In a future phase of the pilot, the data will also be made available for use in OpenStreetMap." Sounds like they're asking to verify buildings from the county for a future import? Imagery appears to be 2021 from the URL.

This sounds like a great topic to attract new attendees. Many of the group regulars might already understand this workflow. I personally have no exposure or bandwidth to figure it out. Though it recently piqued my interest on GISCorps.

Best,

Sounds like there's enough interest in this topic. I've made a PR for the posting with next steps on announcements.

I'm interested in this topic, but that is also the first day of the NACIS conference in Tacoma, and I'm already committed to that. Is there any way to document it as a blog post or video to read/watch later?

Hmm I also missed the NACIS overlap, so that is also a conflict for me.

If we haven’t done a lot of advertising could we possibly defer a week? If we did that we could add a “Best of NACIS” recap to the agenda as well…

(feel free to ignore this idea if we want to stay consistent)

Did not see this as well. I just removed the posts and can change the dates. But Michael has secured the standing dates at Hot Lips. If that can be changed, I'm fine to correct all the listings. And if we can't use Hot Lips, I'm sure we can convene somewhere nearby.

Apologies for the spam (there is a digest y'know 😉 ). Thanks to Michael for securing the following week for a meeting on 10/23 at Hot Lips. I'll add NACIS debrief on the agenda. :) Look for the announcement shortly.

Here's an article from today's WaPo (gifted) re: how FEMA maps didn't adequately designate some areas as flood hazard zones due to historical flood data that doesn't account for the extreme weather events we're seeing now due to climate change

"FEMA maps missed parts of North Carolina devastated by Hurricane Helene, Post analysis shows"
