I would like to set up an altar behind Guardino, but have a few logistical issues re: weatherproofing. Are there going to be canopies available, and pallets/boxes to raise stuff off the ground in case of rain? Is there power available? Thanks! --- On Sun, 10/11/09, Stephanie Brockway <bluew...@yahoo.com> wrote: |
I cannot attend the 7 pm meeting on the 13th as I have class. Please keep me informed as to set up details.
Vincent Ramirez and I are installing "Doy Gracias" as the main altar at Onda, and have invited artists and the public to build on or contribute to the community altar. That piece is completed and we install on the 27th.
"Constellation" (Guardino Gallery 38) is the wall shrine/altar I had planned to install behind Guardino. This is still a work in progress. It was originally built to be an indoor hanging wall shrine (another component to a larger work called The Temple of Memory), so I am trying to come up with modifications to make it work in an outdoor environment. I am thinking aloud here. The back of Guardino is not anything we can drill into or attach things to, and you cannot stake into the parking lot, so everything must be free standing and be able to withstand wind and rain. If anyone has some extra boxes and pedestals, I can come up with some pallets and cloths. The canopy I had planned on borrowing is not available. Sorry, I am not experienced with outdoor installations, and will very much appreciate guidance from all of you!!

I scouted a few weeks ago when I picked up cards to distribute - the milk crate idea is a good one. I can build a wall around the altar for wind shelter that way, and put it all up on a pallet to get it off the ground. I'll ask Donna about the canopy.
How do you coordinate who goes where, and how many altar builders do we have already? Thx! |
| You might want to coordinate with the gallery owners. --- On Mon, 10/12/09, Justine Avera <flicke...@yahoo.com> wrote: |
Buff - Vince and I are setting up Doy Gracias on the 27th, and would welcome your company and contribution. I will get back to you as to when Allen wants us in the gallery. He was going to open it up to the public at large on the 29th, but have a core group of artists come in on the 27th to set up the framework.
I am imagining this great spilling group of altars. I would also like to have a place to leave messages, memories, wishes, and confirmations. What do you think of having a few urns/baskets with parchment papers for people to write on and leave with the altars, or an open book to write on?
Anne would love to join Maude in making neo-calaveros. Anne & Margaret will be doing the procession with us, though Vince and I have to bounce between the 2 galleries as well and try to take pictures. Maybe we could coordinate an MLC group of kids and round up one or two more chaperones?
You bring up a good point, these ofrendas or family altars are not just for Dias de los Muertos, they are year round, and can help manifest good energies and positive changes in our lives as well as linking us to our loved ones, muses and ancestors. --- On Tue, 10/13/09, Buff Medb Neretin <auror...@gmail.com> wrote: |
