I would like to set up an altar behind Guardino, but have a few logistical issues re: weatherproofing.  Are there going to be canopies available, and pallets/boxes to raise stuff off the ground in case of rain?  Is there power available?  Thanks!

Yes, let's meet tomorrow night. How about 7 p.m. at Vita Cafe (3023 NE Alberta)? That way we can walk over and look at the space behind Guardino.

Justine, I think it's a good idea to plan for all weather by bringing a canopy and tarps, as well as something to raise the altar off the ground, but I wouldn't expect those items to be supplied for you.

We brought a canopy for the main altar last year and were glad to have it, since it began raining shortly after the procession. (I had prayed for dry pavement for the procession and got exactly what I asked for.) I do recall that Donna Guardino may have had a canopy to lend, or maybe others on this list have one you can borrow?

We did run power out from Guardino, so bring an extension cord if you want electricity for your altar.

I cannot attend the 7 pm meeting on the 13th as I have class.  Please keep me informed as to set up details.

Vincent Ramirez and I are installing "Doy Gracias" as the main altar at Onda, and have invited artists and the public to build on or contribute to the community altar.  That piece is completed and we install on the 27th.

"Constellation" (Guardino Gallery 38) is the wall shrine/altar I had planned to install behind Guardino.  This is still a work in progress.  It was originally built to be an indoor hanging wall shrine (another component to a larger work called The Temple of Memory), so I am trying to come up with modifications to make it work in an outdoor environment.  I am thinking aloud here.  The back of Guardino is not anything we can drill into or attach things to, and you cannot stake into the parking lot, so everything must be free standing and be able to withstand wind and rain.  If anyone has some extra boxes and pedestals, I can come up with some pallets and cloths.  The canopy I had planned on borrowing is not available.  Sorry, I am not experienced with outdoor installations, and will very much appreciate guidance from all of you!!

Oh, Justine, that is beautiful. You might want to visit the space behind Guardino to scout for a location. I'm thinking of the space to the right as you exit the parking lot onto 30th (there was a hose there last year as I recall). It was relatively sheltered and right against a wall. You could build a stand out of milk crates and brace it against the wall.

We'll probably have one more meeting before the event. Maybe Monday the 26th?

I scouted a few weeks ago when I picked up cards to distribute - the milk crate idea is a good one.  I can build a wall around the altar for wind shelter that way, and put it all up on a pallet to get it off the ground.  I'll ask Donna about the canopy.

How do you coordinate who goes where, and how many altar builders do we have already?  Thx!

If people ask for specific spots, we can tape them off when we arrive to set up. Otherwise it will be first come, first served.

Dallas (new to the list) said he wants to create the infrastructure for the main altar and maybe the gate, and I believe BirdKat plans to do the Altar for the Animals again.

Altar artists? Please check in.

You might want to coordinate with the gallery owners.

Yes, we need to talk with Donna about a bunch of logistical stuff. Checking in with her is on my to-do list. Appreciate help from anyone who would like to be part of that conversation.

Hey y'all,
I'm Dallas, the new guy on the list. I am an installation artist with 6 years experience installing art both indoors and out and I have about 4 years experience with remodels and home construction.  I have some ideas for the main alter and ways in which to weather proof everything. The alter I have in mind would be weather proofed on it's on, without any secondary structure to cover it. I also have a few ideas in regards to the gate, but those are not solid enough in my mind to discuss at this point.

Is the plan to meet at the site tomorrow at 7pm? I'd love to be there for that.  I plan to begin construction of the alter I have in mind this week, and would love to discuss, share in the process, and show images of it throughout it's construction and I'm always open for critique in both concept and execution.

On a personal level this opportunity is monumental for me. Many ancestors have been communicating and encouraging me lately, I feel this is something they really want me to be a part of. So I'm here in as many ways as needed and as possible.

With love and appreciation,
Dallas

Hola, Todos,

I am preparing my altar, composed mostly of living folks and current
things of value, small. Justine, I'd like to add on to Doy Gracias,
how to do so?

Also, my daughter has made a neo-calvados - a head on a stick - which
we will be making multiples of an carrying with us. Any other kids out
there want to make same?

Pix to come.

Buff - Vince and I are setting up Doy Gracias on the 27th, and would welcome your company and contribution.  I will get back to you as to when Allen wants us in the gallery.  He was going to open it up to the public at large on the 29th, but have a core group of artists come in on the 27th to set up the framework.

I am imagining this great spilling group of altars.  I would also like to have a place to leave messages, memories, wishes, and confirmations.  What do you think of having a few urns/baskets with parchment papers for people to write on and leave with the altars, or an open book to write on?

Anne would love to join Maude in making neo-calaveros.  Anne & Margaret will be doing the procession with us, though Vince and I have to bounce between the 2 galleries as well and try to take pictures.  Maybe we could coordinate an MLC group of kids and round up one or two more chaperones?

You bring up a good point, these ofrendas or family altars are not just for Dias de los Muertos, they are year round, and can help manifest good energies and positive changes in our lives as well as linking us to our loved ones, muses and ancestors.

Dear Buff,
I trust this finds you well ~ it's so cool to see your name appear on this
listserv! I've been reading the posts from a distance... I'm a big fan of
Onda Gallery and I was able to participate in the project last year with the
writers' group, Los Porteños but this year the Dia de muertos production I'm
directing (Canta y no llores) is in previews on the night of the Alberta
Street event and so I can't attend! From all the emails on the listserv, it
sounds like it's going to be a great event!

I just wanted to make a few small comments, and please forgive me for
intruding. Traditionally, it's considered a kind of bad luck to put a
picture of a living person on the dia de muertos altar. Also, someone
earlier mentioned leaving the altars up all year round, and that's of course
cool, like a monument, but it would be not unlike leaving a Christmas tree
up all year round. You may already know this, and I'm not recommending you
don’t follow thru with your ideas, I only wanted to provide some
context/food for thought...

That's enough from me, clearly folks here are embracing the holiday and
making it their own, which I truly appreciate... I am personally fascinated
by, and work daily in the intersection of cultures ~ it will be interesting
to see how Alberta Street's muertos event evolves over the years! I would
love to see Dia de muertos become a national holiday!

Best,
Olga Sanchez...
