Hey folks,

Just wanted to give you all a heads-up about the next Towards Carfree Cities conference -- this is the same one we hosted here in Portland in 2008. This year it's in medieval olde York, England in June. Should be interesting and lots of fun. It's usually well set-up for folks who are on a budget and this year's looks like it includes a lot of transpo-wonkery themed tours. Bliss! Many more details below.

Oh yeah, and Shift is a long-time member organization of the World Carfree Network, whose conference this is. So if you consider yourself part of Shift, you can register at the WCN member rate.

Dear all

On behalf of our organising team, I just want to invite you once again to attend the ninth Towards Carfree Cities conference, from June 28th to July 1st this year. World Carfree Network's annual meeting is then taking place on July 2nd, followed by some optional weekend excursions.

For a summary of the programme - which is improving week by week - see http://www.worldcarfree.net/conference/programme.php

For anything else about the conference, please see the main page http://www.worldcarfree.net/conference/ and the links can be found from there.

There is a substantial discount on registration for World Carfree Network members, and we'd strongly recommend that you register and book your accommodation by the end of March. (York is a busy place, and hotels/hostels will fill up.)

We would like to ask for your help in spreading the word about the conference. With this in mind, I'm attaching a PDF flyer. If you could pass it along to your networks and contacts, we'd very much appreciate it.

I've also pasted below a conference announcement that you are free to publish wherever you like.

Lastly, I'm about to start working half time on the conference, so please do get in touch and share your ideas for the programme.

Hope to see you in June,

Randy

TOWARDS CARFREE CITIES IX - YORK 2010

We invite you to join us for this international gathering of experts, practitioners and campaigners dedicated to promoting sustainable and equitable alternatives to the motor car. The focus is on strategy, collaboration and exchange, assisting the practical work of conference participants, from organising carfree days to planning the carfree cities of the future.

This year's conference, "How Do We Get There?", will focus on bringing carfree communities to life, considering a range of strategies from temporary events to permanent road space reallocation to European models of new carfree development. We plan to carry out a real street conversion during the conference!

We will also learn from and seek inspiration from the past, by looking at how the medieval pedestrian city was organised spatially, and how these principles could be applied to future settlements. The key challenges of fostering political and public acceptability for car reduction measures will be examined, including an exploration of the conditions under which people willingly give up the car in exchange for the benefits of living in traffic-free environments.

Keynote speakers:

  • Dr Barbara Schmucki (Institute of Railway Studies and Transport History, University of York) - The Quick and The Dead: A History of the Pedestrian
  • J.H. Crawford (author of Carfree Cities and Carfree Design Manual) - A Vision of Carfree Cities for the 21st Century
  • Professor John Whitelegg (Liverpool John Moores University and Stockholm Environment Institute) - Designing a Zero-Carbon Transport System: Action Speaks Louder than Words
