Cat Adoption Team’s Android Phone

App Adopted by Boise Shelter

(May 29, 2012) – The Cat Adoption Team (Sherwood, Ore)’s launched an Android phone application last year. The CAT App is available for free download to android-enabled phones through Google Play (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.catadoptionteam.catdroid).

Simply Cats (simplycats.org) located in Boise Idaho, adopted the CAT app.

Today Simply Cats releases its free Android phone app based modified from CAT’s app. CAT’s phone app is the only Open Source software of its kind available for FREE. Along with the free source code, shelters receive free tools, servers, and technical assistance.

The app is a derivative of the Open Source app made available to other animal shelters for free by the Cat Adoption Team. The app was created by Cat Adoption Team volunteer Mitch Besser of Lake Oswego, Oregon.

The app includes the following features:

  • Cat of the Day, automatic downloads a new cat bio and photo every day
  • Match-9-Lives, a memory puzzle that highlights adoptable animals from the shelter
  • ASPCA's Meet Your Match Survey, connecting adopters with the pets that best suit their lifestyle
  • Support for Spanish speaking adopters
  • Advanced Pet Search tool with Automatic Notification for matching cats
  • Interactive logo, including a $20 adoption discount coupon if double clicked
  • Cat Videos created by the shelter
  • Shelter open hours clock
  • And more...

The app is designed to help on-the-go pet adopters find their perfect companion. The app uses the ASPCA's "Meet Your Match" program for identifying the homes and personalities that best match pets with adopters. CAT uses this program to help adopters at its shelter.

The app includes some surprising fun extras. For example, petting the shelter logo slowly from head to tail will cause the phone to purr and vibrate. Press and hold the logo for a few seconds and the user is treated to a Cheshire Cat animation.

With over 5,000 animal shelters seeking to find permanent homes for pets, this software has the ability to save countless lives.

Open Source is a software development philosophy with an emphasis on the sharing of ideas and work for the benefit of the community. With over 900 app downloads, the Cat Adoption Team is leading the effort to find homes for animals through mobile technology.

The Simply Cats app is available on the Google Play website at:

The Cat Adoption Team (CAT) is the Pacific Northwest’s largest non-profit, feline-only adoption guarantee shelter. CAT was the first animal shelter in Oregon with its own full service veterinary hospital on site (2002). CAT was also the first shelter in the Portland-metro area to open an organized pet food bank (2008). The Cat Food Bank hands out over 3,000 pounds of donated food monthly. CAT’s mission is to work with the community to save the lives of unwanted, homeless, sick, and injured cats and kittens by offering shelter, adoption, foster, low-cost spay/neuter, and veterinary services to end needless feline euthanasia. CAT will find homes for over 2,700 felines this year. As a 501(c)(3) publicly-supported charity, CAT relies on the generous support of the public and volunteers.
