Q: We are using your product to convert PDF to SVG and having trouble
when trying to convert documents.

The attached files include source PDF and resulting SVG pages. We have
tried to view the SVGs in 4 applications, namely Firefox 4, Internet
Explorer 8, Google Chrome and Inkscape. Some are producing garbled
view including strange font problems and absence of some graphical
elements.

Following command was used to generate the SVG:

/usr/local/bin/pdf2svg --digits 4 -i --noxmldoc --nothumbs --prefix /
document128 -o /u01/tmp /tmp/input.pdf

A: Unfortunately the implementation of SVG standard in many of these
applications is buggy and far from complete. With Apple/Google pushing
for HTML5 it seems that situation may change for better.

SVG support in FireFox is far from complete and it is not surprising
that files are not displayed properly. In this case you may want to
file a bug report to FireFox team.

Also older versions of Google Chrome and Safari (which are using the
same SVG library) didn’t properly render SVG due to bugs. It seems
that the issue was finally fixed in the latest/current version of
Chrome, and your files display correctly. So in this case the solution
is upgrade your browser.

The files also display properly in Adobe SVG Viewer (IE8) as well as
in Batik.

In the latest version of PDF2SVG (http://www.pdftron.com/pdf2svg/) we
added
'--individual_char_placement' option which can improve the viewing in
some older browsers, but this is a hack around viewer bugs which could
produce bloated files.
