Call for Papers: Archival Conference on Challenges and Opportunities of Managing Archives and Records in a Changing Environment

The South African Society of Archivists in conjunction with the Department of Information Science at UNISA and the National Archives is going to host a national conference of archivists, records managers and heritage personnel in Pretoria on 25-26 November 2009. The theme of the conference will be challenges and opportunities of managing archives and records for the present and future generations. Papers on topics that address the theme of the conference and the following areas will be considered for inclusion in the conference programme. Accepted papers will be considered for publication in the ESARBICA Journal (SAPES accredited) after the usual peer review process.

·         Access to records and archives for diverse communities

·         Review of archival legislation

·         Records and information management as keys to service delivery

·         Archival and records management infrastructure in South Africa

·         Relevance of existing records and archival programmes to the job – market and current challenges faced by the profession

·         Role of professional association in fostering curriculum development and professionalism

·         Marketing and public programming in records and archives

·         Research agenda for the future

·         Photographic and audiovisual archives: preservation, description and copyright

·         Electronic records: the state of the art in the various countries in Africa

·         International descriptive standards: national initiatives and experiences

·         Digital preservation

·         Preservation of the records of former liberation movements in Africa

·         Managing records for accountability, good governance and protection of human rights

·         National Archives and e-government initiatives

·         From e-government to participatory Government

Important Dates:

Submission of abstracts: 30 August 2009

Notification of acceptance of abstracts: 4 September 2009
Paper submission: 10 October 2009
Notification of acceptance: 30 October 2009
Camera-ready copy due: 8 November 2008
Conference/Workshop: 25 and 26 November 2009
