dedicated to the principles of individual freedom and equal
access. And nothing, says Schiller (a professor of
communications at the University of California, San Diego),
could be further from the truth. On the contrary, digital
networks emerged to meet the real-world needs of
increasingly globalized big businesses, and it is primarily
those needs that they continue to serve. So goes Schiller's
argument--and in the end you may or may not agree with it.
But the importance of his argument is such that, sooner or
later, you will probably have to grapple with it.
