I've just cowritten a book called Six Months Off: How to Plan, Negotiate,
and Take the Break You Need Without Burning Bridges or Going Broke (Henry
Holt, 1996; ISBN: 0-8050-3745-4). The book was based on interviews with
more than 200 people in a wide variety of occupations, and many of the
examples cited in the book are those of people living in Portland and the
Pacific Northwest. They used the time off to do the things they've always
dreamed of doing--traveling to exotic places, reconnecting with their
family, getting in touch with their spiritual side, learning new things.
Virtually all the people we interviewed described the time off as one of
the high points of their life, and many found that it reenergized their
career as well as their psyche.
The book just hit the bookstores two weeks ago, but I'm already at work
gathering sabbatical strategies and stories for a second edition. If
you've taken a sabbatical, or if you're thinking of taking one, please
send me any strategies you've come up with for fitting a lengthy break
into your life. I may wish to use your story in the second edition of Six
Months Off. To qualify, your sabbatical doesn't have to be six months or
more in length, but it should be longer than a typical vacation--eight
weeks minimum.
Thanks for any advice you can share. Also, if you want to obtain a copy
of Six Months Off and it's sold out in the stores, call me at
503-230-2780, and I can help you get a copy.
