Some people don't like books. Some people do like books. Some people
like books in Fine condition. And some people like books in Fine condition
and in first edition. But... some people like books in Fine condition
and in first edition and in the first state of the first edition.

For those who want only the first state of the first edition, a few words
of explanation. "Edition" is actually a modern and improper description
of the order in which sets of books are published. In the past, the term
"printing" was used to designate sets of books (example: this set of
books was printed before that set of books, and one can tell by the row of
numbers that used to include one through ten now only including two
through ten). A "state" is a variant of an edition: although a set of
books was published generally at the same time, there was some change made
during that printing. A famous example is the first edition of the Wizard
of Oz. The pages, illustrations and covers of that book were published as
they were needed, so a "first edition" of the book may include several
states (such as an earlier set of pages with a later cover). There is
also the issue of country of origin: if a book appears for the first time
in the UK, is it a first edition if a previous edition appeared in the US?
What if they appeared at the same time? What if no previous edition
appeared in the US but the author is from the US? All of these variables
do not necessarily negate an honest description of "first edition" to
distinctly different books... it's all a matter of how you define your
terms and how much you want to conform to those terms.

There appear to be several editions and several states of Hugh Johnson's
Pop-Up Wine Book. According to 'Pop-Up and Movable Books / A
Bibliography' by Ann Montanaro, the first edition of this book is called
'Hugh Johnson's Pop-Up Wine Book' (the title being designated by the title
page when possible and the front cover otherwise), and is published by
Harper & Row in 1989. However, I have an edition published by Harper &
Row in 1989 with ''Hugh Johnson Introduces You to the Wonderful World of
Wine' / THE POP-UP WINE BOOK' on the front cover. So that makes two
states of a first edition. Montanaro lists Pyramid as a second publisher,
and I know of one state of this edition with a price and one state of this
edition without a price. Thus, we have two different first editions in
two states.

Now you know everything we do. Are any of these books first state, first
editions? I think #2683 is... but I may be wrong. To some of you none of
this may make a bit of difference; for those that pay attention to
editions, you may now make an informed choice (or go away more confused
than you were before). All should note that these books are accurately
described as in Fine condition: they are as new and without flaw. J.
Whirler doesn't have all that much when it comes to wine books, but we do
have our share of pop-ups (including, when we can find it, The Ultimate
Pop-Up Cocktail Book). If you aren't getting out lists on a regular basis
and would like to, please ask!
