Federal MPs are unlikely to debate Labor's gay marriage bill
before mid-August, if at all, after Prime Minister Tony Abbott
indicated there were more important issues on parliament's
agenda.

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten today introduced a private bill
to allow same-sex marriage, replacing man and woman with the
words two people in the Marriage Act.

He told parliament Australian laws should be a mirror reflecting
our great and generous country and our free, inclusive society.

The bill's introduction was described as a momentous day by same-
sex marriage advocates, notwithstanding there are two similar
pieces of legislation already before parliament.
