We recognize that you as coastal business owners help fuel Virginia's
economy. The BP disaster showed us oil spills are a reality that not only
damage our environment, but also harm our coastal economies. Please help
protect our coasts, beaches, and coastal economies by telling Virginia
Beach Mayor Sessoms to lend his influence in ensuring a very high bar is
set protecting our coast from offshore drilling. |
Dear Virginia Beach Mayor Will Sessoms,
As a Virginia
Beach business, I support the position of your Alternative Energy
Task Force on offshore drilling for oil and gas. Due to the
potential negative economic and environmental impacts from spills or
leaks on our critically important tourism, outdoor recreation, and
commercial and sport fishing industries, we recommend that
exploration and development of offshore oil and natural gas only be
considered when:
- The Department of Defense and NASA are
satisfied that drilling will not interfere with their operations off
the coast of Virginia; and
- Federal oil and gas policies,
drilling and production technology, and local oil spill response
capabilities have been upgraded to ensure that there is no
possibility of either a major spill or recurring small spills off
the coast of Virginia.
Furthermore, we encourage the City of
Virginia Beach to proactively advocate for renewable energy, such as
offshore wind and solar.
