At the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay, we believe that clean streams and resilient landscapes should be cared for by all the people who live, work, and play in the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Our collaborative and action-oriented approach delivers on-the-ground solutions, technical assistance, and builds capacity to achieve healthier lands and cleaner water.

But we can’t do this work alone. We are looking for passionate, strategic leaders to join our Board of Directors.

Are you a Washington, DC resident with a heart for the environment and a knack for leadership? We want to hear from you!

What Does it Mean to Serve on Our Board?

Our Board of Directors serves as governing body of the organization. As a member, you’ll provide the strategic direction, fiduciary oversight, and fundraising assistance necessary to help us reach our goals. While our CEO and talented staff handle the day-to-day operations, the Board focuses on the “big picture”—ensuring the Alliance remains a strong, sustainable, and impactful force for the watershed.

Who We Are Looking For

To help us maintain a balanced and effective governing body, we are currently seeking candidates who meet the following criteria:

  • DC Local: Must be a current resident of Washington, DC.
  • Experienced Leader: Have at least 3 years of experience serving on a nonprofit board.
  • Mission-Driven: Familiarity with our work and a deep commitment to our vision of a healthy Chesapeake Bay watershed.
  • Strategic Thinker: Must demonstrate strategic thinking, good judgment, decision-making skills, and excellent interpersonal skills

We are especially interested in candidates who bring expertise in Fundraising & DevelopmentLegal & Governance, or Human Resources

Your Commitment to the Watershed

Serving on the Board is an opportunity to act as a true ambassador for the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Key responsibilities include:

  • Attending four Board Meetings annually (held at various beautiful locations throughout the Chesapeake Bay Watershed).
  • Participating in one Board committee (meeting virtually for about an hour each month).
  • Sharing the Alliance’s mission with your personal and professional networks.
  • Making a personally significant annual donation to support our mission.

How to Apply

If you’re ready to use your skills to make a lasting impact on our local waters, we would love to see your application.

Please submit a statement of interest and your resume to Eleni Kotsis at eko...@allianceforthebay.org by May 1st.
