Much as I love WD drives, I advise against these and Seagate externals
because they don't have on/off switches and no fans. Those are the 2
biggest reasons for me to pass on external drives.

Huh?

I am looking at a Seagate desktop external with a fan.  I have 3 others, portable, with no fans.  Why no fans?  Lower power consumption means they are 100% USB powered, no AC brick required.

Your smartphpone doesn't have a fan.

I fail to see why we would advocate for active cooling system (a fan) when they consume power and add weight and noise, if the engineering can be such that a device can be passively cooled.

extension cord with an on off switch built into the end. I bought a 5 footer
as that all I need and you plug into the power strip and place the on off
( red lighted switch) on you desk or where ever and you are the now the
proud owner of an external with an on off switch all for about $5.00 !!!

Because some people want fans in their phones!  :-)

Seriously, I agree wholeheartedly!  I have several external drives and the cases are designed for the drive. Actually runs cooler with the passive cooling than it would with the fan and it's quieter and greener, too.

Small portables first of all don't last like powered external 3.5
drives but they also don't generate the heat that kills the units.
The only two makers I see with no on/off switches and no fans are WD
and Seagate and major forums are riddled with posts like "my external
drive is no longer recognized" and they are mostly Seagates and WD's.
Iomega still makes most with fans and on/off switches and so do most
of the other major makers and every case maker I have ever seen that
sells external cases. Listen to yourselves! "Passive cooling" in a
case you can barely see into? "Lower power consumption"? Oh please the
motivation is save a $ for them like in everything else and charge the
same price.
