Calendar sync iOS and Apple OS on & off the internet ... suggestions?

If someone uses MAC computers plus iOS on iphone/ipads and wants to sync a calendar what is the best method.

Calendar must work while connected to the internet and in areas of no internet access also.

Suggestions Please? Ideas?
