We are glad to announce that Smile Communications Uganda Ltd have kindly offered to be Premium Sponsors for Uganda’s Sanitation Hackathon, to be held at their headquarters offices in Bukoto starting on the evening of Friday 14th December, ending 48 hours later with mobile apps teams giving their elevator pitches to a panel of judges
on the evening of the Sunday 16th December.

Uganda is one of the countries that have been selected to host the first-ever global gathering of sanitation experts and IT developers next month for an intensive weekend dedicated to developing innovative solutions to challenges facing the sanitation and hygiene sector. Other Sanitation Hackathons will have taken plane within the previous
week in several cities around the world, including  Dar es Salaam, Cape Town, Dakar , Dhaka, Jakarta, Lahore, Lima, London (Remember Joseph Bazalgette?), Pune, San Francisco, New York and Chicago.

While up to 90 per cent of those in Sub-Saharan Africa have access to a sanitation facility, only around 12 per cent are using safe facilities that protect health and wellbeing. The growing local IT community and developers around the world have the potential to develop solutions to help increase and track access to improved sanitation.   At the Sanitation Hackathon you and other civic technologists will develop solutions to challenges facing the
sanitation sector.

The Sanitation Hackathon builds on the success of the Water Hackathon organized by the World Bank in 2011, in which nearly 1,000 registered IT professionals at ten global locations developed applications for improving delivery of water services. Some of the winning applications are already being used and developed for scale-up.  Uganda developers led the rest of the world in creating seven working Water Hackathon mobile apps. For a list of problem statements where you may sift through some 88 SanHack ideas check out:
