I went back over a couple messages I saved from earlier. I want to know how everyone's garden turned out. So how did things do???? I can only container garden now... well... I do have some space along a fence, but the soil isn't even close to being good enough to plant.  So anyway, I have an Early Girl Tomato in a big container that is doing great. It's loaded. I planted carrots, onions, garlic, bell pepper, basil, and some hot peppers. I didn't thin the carrots enough, so I don't think they'll be much good. Since my kitchen is down, and I'm busy working on those cabinets, most of my herbs are kind of going to waste.

I saw some one mention growing ginger! Can you plant a piece of root or what?

I'll write more as I can fit it in...

Also... Gman... I bought my very first romaine lettuce today!!! I'm going to have a big nice salad. I bought a good amount of fruit too. I checked the bag of cole slaw, and it doesn't have preservatives in it. I'm sure happy about that. What is your favorite dressing you make yourself?

I'll be back.
Maya

My garden consisted of zucchini squash and yellow crook necks, radishes, tomatoes, and kohlrabi.  The squash has overwhelmed us!  I planted 4 hills and only 2 came up so I went back and planted 4 more and they all came up. I have supplied everyone in Church each Sunday and when I have to bring back a sack full I will pull up the vines.  Grasshoppers have been really bad here this year and they really like kohlrabi leaves so they have not done well.  They also like tomatoes so I have to pick them as soon as they start to turn and bring them inside to finish ripening.  Love this fresh garden stuff!
To digress, I mentioned real life kind of taking over here.  Seems life has given us a series of sucker punches right in the gut starting with the death of DH's sister after a long bout with cancer.  Her husband was in a car wreck a few days before she died and was unable to attend the services.  We thought he was recovering and then got word he had passed away too.  So 2 funerals 2 weeks apart. Then a few days ago our youngest son called to tell us his mother-in-law died in a diabetic coma.  This was not totally unexpected as she has been a severe diabetic for years and has had many times when her husband had to revive her and many times the ambulance came and medics brought her back.   This time nothing worked (I thought of mentioning this when tabletalk was discussing diabetes but it seemed a real "downer")  So tomorrow we go to another funeral and we are hoping and praying for a "breather" for a while. My DH says it goes with the territory of growing old and then he is one of a family of ten so lots of losses waiting to happen.

Maya, have I got a treat for you! :O)

Ever hear of Lasagna Gardening?
http://tinyurl.com/32qa8n

For growing your own Ginger,
http://tinyurl.com/64fcb6
http://tinyurl.com/6642oc
http://tinyurl.com/67zgdq

And add some of those herbs to your salads. They have a lot of health
benefits to offer the two of you, but only if you get them into your body.

Romaine lettuce is much healthier than Iceberg and I personally think it
tastes better. If you add a bit of fresh spinach (not too much), there's a
really good chance that even those who think they hate spinach will not even
realize it's there since there's hardly any real taste to it when uncooked.

Fruits are another great way to get many essentials into your body, but take
it easy at first. If you're not used to eating much fruit, it'll take your
system a bit of time to adjust. If you over do it, your near term reward
will be more time spent in the bathroom. Over the course of a month or two,
gradually increase your intake of anything you wish to try that you're not
used to eating. By taking it slow, you'll be giving yourself more and more
of the good stuff without subjecting your body to 'detox shock', which is
basically what causes the bathroom runs (pun only semi-intended).

For home-made salad dressing, I have several 'favorites', but I'll toss you
this easy one for now.

Vinaigrette

½ to 2 Tbs. quality wine vinegar

(or a mixture of wine vinegar and fresh lemon juice)

1/8 tsp. sea salt

6 Tbs. virgin olive oil

1/8 tsp. freshly ground black pepper

1 to 2 Tbs. fresh parsley, chives, tarragon, basil and chervil
(finely minced) [substitutions welcome, but keep it interesting]

Combine all of the ingredients in a glass bottle and shake well before
using.

Keep Refrigerated.

Peace,
Gman

Sandi,
I'm sorry to hear that you two have been through such a rough run.
Hopefully, there's a bit of truth that things like this come in threes and
you'll now get the break you're wishing for.

I'm really sorry life has been so rough Sandi. I hope you get a much needed breather too. That's a lot in a short time too.

I'm thrilled you wrote though. I loved hearing about your garden. I didn't know grasshoppers would eat tomatoes. Now that you've mentioned it, I don't think I've ever seen a grasshopper where we live now. How odd. I've developed a taste for squash, but I've never grown any. But we have been fortunate to be given some from time to time. I have some now I need to cook. I like to cook it with a little olive oil, tomatoes, basil, wine, a little onion... and top it with some grated cheese.

I gather you have a real garden and a green thumb! How big is it?

Yep... you are right... what a treat!!!! Lasagna Gardening is perfect for me... and great timing too. Thank you so much.

I haven't bought Iceberg lettuce in many years. Once I found out it doesn't have any nutritional value, we switched to bagged cole slaw. But I guess it would be ok for taste if I put enough other things in it. I'm anxious to give Romaine a try. Also, fresh spinach is the only way I can eat it... otherwise I hate the stuff.

I am already having some bathroom trouble the last couple days. I think my system is rebelling against some of the crap I've been eating the last few weeks. I bought some Whole Grain White Wonder Bread... SIGH... and my body sure didn't like that. I normally make all our bread, but I use a bread machine. Anyway... you are right, and I'll need to move a little slowly with the fruit and raw stuff. Everything has gotten so much more expensive that we haven't bought much fruit this summer.

Your salad dressing sounds wonderful. I'll give it a try. I never thought about making my own. I'm surprised about that. I used to make my own mayo until the salmonella scare.  The last few years, I've gotten more and more into natural eating and cooking almost all of our food.

I have a "real" garden or rather two "real" garden spots.  Not big but plenty enough for just the two of us.  As for the green thumb, I don't think so.  Sometimes I just get lucky.  I have no success at all with house plants but I like a small garden and my flower beds (as long as I stick to the hardy, easy to grow stuff).
For tomatoes, I set out 1 Lemon Boy, 2 jet star, 1 celebrity, and one big beef.  I need to mark them better because a couple of them did not produce.  I think it was jet star.  My brother plants jet star every year and he has great tomatoes.  Maybe different soil??

with us it's more than threes :-(

sorry to hear everything you've been thru.............it seems i missed a
lot of emails in this group with my older pc dying and getting a new one and
then having to delete a ton of
google mail cause it just would not download.

i can't believe all the remodeling also that everyone's been
doing................i don't have the physical ability to do that type of
thing and hubby doesn't have time with working and we sure don't have the
money to have things done. we did buy our house new (well it sat here empty
for 2 yrs) but after 28 yrs some things are definitely needing some work and
actually at this point I don't know if we'll ever be able to do any of them.
But I'm blessed for having a roof over my head :-)

I am so sorry to hear that Sandy. I hope life will smooth out for you now.

Welcome back too!!! I hope to hear from you more now.

We are on the last of our remodeling. I want this place up to snuff in case we have to sell it.  I don't think we'll even be able to do anymore jobs of this sort anyway. Housing was going crazy when we sold our other home and bought this one. Now... prices have dropped so much. sigh! I still don't regret it although we had to do a ton of work here. It might have helped keep us stronger too.

We were walking 5 days a week before we started on this kitchen, and we'll get back to it soon.  What does everyone else do for exercise?

Walking is one of the best exercises one can do. Swimming, if available to
you, is even more of a low impact workout and can get the ol' heart up to
speed faster than walking. I walk and do a lot of stuff around the yard and
garage, but I do wish we had a pool so I could get in some laps once in a
while (especially on hot days). lol

i used to walk.................do my arthritis tape.............ride my stationary bike..............ride my regular bike outdoors,  before menopause hit me like a ton of bricks and also my fibro intensified.  i'm back taking baby steps getting back to walking 7 days a week and will just build up from there.  i have to take it easy so the fibro doesn't flare up really bad.  so far i'm back up to 7 minute walks a day.......doctor told me no more than 30 minutes a day.........at one time i was overdoing it and it ended up backfiring and now i have to start all over again.

Wow!!! I'm so sorry you have fibro. SIGH!!! I glad you know now what not to do!! We walk about 30 to 45 minutes. That's about all I can do now. Swimming does sound good, but I'm not geared up for it. I do try to move around a lot. I've lost a bit of muscle, and I need to build myself up again. Take care, and just do what you can.

Maya,
Swimming is such a low impact form that you don't need to be 'geared up'
for it. Better yet, it will work more muscle groups concurrently than any
other exercise in existence, including walking. Even better than that, you
get the workout without really trying. You only do as little or as much as
you wish and your stamina will naturally increase over time.

Peace,
Gman
