Has anyone tried this? A friend sent me one as a birthday gift. She said if I like it she will send me the one she used last year too. hahaha. She said she thinks maybe she didn't keep it watered enough. I have planted it with two tomato plants. Here in CA it's not too early to plant some things. Heck, it was over 80° the other day. I wouldn't have planted any tomatoes this early in the ground though. I'm still planting in containers because I still didn't get what little ground I have ready to plant.

Never even heard about it until now, but will be eagerly awaiting word from
you on how the little buggers are coming along through the planting season.

Maya, we have been seeing these advertised just about everywhere.  I think Maurice is tempted to try it but I prefer to stick to the tried and true (as long as he prepares the garden spot for me!)

I'd had seen them on TV and thought about trying it. So far the toms are growing great. I think I'll have my friend send me her old one... I read in the instructions you can plant other things in them too... like green beans or peppers. I'll be sure to send up dates as the season goes.

Does anyone know anything about dietary powdered fiber? I've been buying it and adding to foods I eat to increase my fiber intake. I guess what I'm asking is are there any reasons I shouldn't do this?  I'm sure I don't get enough eating fruits and veggies.

Hi Sandi!,
I think it's great you have a good soil worker!!! Let me know when and what you have planted. How big is your garden area?

Area is very small by choice.  We live in what used to be our pasture.  When we moved the house in we fenced off what we wanted for our yard and landscaped it.  The pasture goes on forever (well not really but it is plenty big) so Maurice fenced a small area and we grow our tomatoes, bell peppers, radishes, jalapeno peppers, kohlrabi, onions in that small garden.  We have an open space behind some trees that is also plowed up and that is where we put the potatoes.  I will probably put some radishes there as well. Nothing very fancy and I really don't want to do a lot of canning and/or freezing.

Maya, I just googled Topsy Turvy and the reviews are mixed.  The good ones say they are growing nicely and look great.  The bad ones say the same but the vines reach upward toward the sun and as the tomatoes set on and grow, they get too big and break the branch before they will ripen.  I had not thought about that aspect but it makes sense.

I did some last year and they did reach up for the sun...didn't have enough tomatoes on them to break anything at all...but they were fun to watch grow and you might have better luck than I did...Can't say I didn't enjoy fooling with them but had to buy my tomatoes.

Hey Sandi... meant to get back to you sooner. I didn't think to google it. I might do that still. I'm sorry to hear that some vines broke before the fruit could even ripen. sigh. Seem like my vines do look like they are trying to grow up... and they already have some blossoms too!
I'll keep you informed.

It's sounds like you have just the right amount for garden for now. I've never grown potatoes before. I'd like to plant even a couple just to see what fresh from the earth tastes like. Perhaps it will happen one day.

I'll look forward to some updates.

I'm sure hoping I don't end up without any tomatoes!!!! sigh... it is fun fooling with it, but I love my summer tomatoes. I'm now wondering if I should plant just one upright plant.... Yep... that's what I'm going to do. Thanks Ann!

For some odd reason I like to dig potatoes!  And they are really good fresh from the garden.  I always forget though that in the growing stage we have to fight off beetles and other insects and when they finally have potatoes we have to fight off the voles or other varmints that like garden stuff.

Hi Folks,
I made my own tomato hanging buckets by drilling 3 X 2"
holes in the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket and putting in
started plants.
I planted them abut April 14 th

That's wicked, Mike!

I'm getting more and more interested in these ideas all the time. Please
keep us appraised on whether they turn out too heavy for the bucket as they
grow or any other unforseen issues that might 'crop up'. ;)

Hi Gman,
I used a light weight sunshine potting mix.
It is very popular with the local 'grow opps'
illegal pot growers.

I go in after the police and get the potting mix<G>
It is a mixture of peat moss sand and perlite and
small Styrofoam pellets.

They are already flowering I have 6 varieties in 3
hanging pots and 3 more planted among my Banana plants.
a total of 10 plants so I may have a lot if it works<G>

Cheers
Mike

Ah, then you are likely to have a better experience than many who skimp on
the soil. My concern here is probably more about the overall
health/strength of the plant when using different soils and additions to the
soil. A lesser soil would, I assume, yield a weaker plant that wouldn't be
able to support the fruit it bore.

some of the articles I read on hanging tomatoes
suggest puting the young plants in nettin/panty hose
to expand as the plants grow.

I will be experimenting.

That's very creative Mike. Thanks for sharing the photo. I'll be following along as the season goes. My tomato plants are doing ok so far, but they appear to be sort of growing up instead of down. I'm thinking as the fruit gets heavier they will grow down just fine, but we'll see. I do have some tiny fruits growing them. I might try to post a photo also.

Hi Maya,
here in the SW Corner of British Columbia Canada
where i live the slugs/snails/and ants attack anything I try
to grow in the ground.
I'm hoping that the hanging planters will be safe from them.

The plants in the bottom are trying to grow up and I anticipate
I will need to support them if they start producing a lot of fruit.

I get a lot of plastic bags when shopping and I have been thinking
of slicing them up to make a netting/rope that will not cut into the
stems the way string would.

I'm thinking of maikng some hanging basket planters with lettuce in
them as it grows fast and the insects won't be able to get at it they
way they do on the ground.

Cheers
Mike

Old panty hose with the legs cut from the panty part make great support in
lieu of string, cord, or wire. You just need a friend to save those for you
as they get runners and need to be thrown away! I am assuming, Mike, that
you are not married and do not buy any for yourself! Big Grin!!
