Having recently purchased a new windows (win7 home premium), DELL
computer, i am having a problem getting internet browsers to
automatically dial my dial up connection.
ie8 dials automatically but i have tried firefox 3.6.12 and
thunderbird 3.1.6 which go directly to the dial up dialog but do not
save the password. they have a check box which i activate but still
they insist that i type the password each time i log on.
and now i am trying opera which will not go directly to the dial up
dialog. i have to connect through the win7 home network in order to
use opera. opera did not prompt to save the password when i logged on
to this site as it says it will in its documentation.
i placed my home page on the speed dial page but it did not dial. i
have password manager enabled but it contains no saved passwords.

since ie8 dials with no input from me it leads me to believe that some
setting in win7 is stopping the other browsers from saving the
password.

any help in this matter would be much appreciated.

another question about win7. i went into explorer\programx86 to delete
a root directory which wasn't removed by windows uninstall and was
denied access because i need administrator rights to delete files in
this directory. i ran belarc advisor which said that administrator
rights were disabled on this computer. why would i not hav
administrative rights on a machine which i own? (I discovered this
when uninstalling firefox whose documentation requested the root
directory be deleted before trying to reinstall. this
c:\programx86\mozilla firefox\components\scriptff.dll, (modified
10/13/2010 which is before i bought the computer) is owned by McAfee
antivirus.
long story short, i am migrating from win98 and am experiencing a
learning curve here.
any advice would be appreciated

thank you

I am pretty sure the problem your having with your other web browsers
is a matter of features. They may only be optimized for a broadband
connection (always on with no dial-up) Long story short, they wont do
what you want because it just isnt in them to do what you are asking.
I use IE8 in with Win7 Ultimate with absolutely no problems.

About your other question, starting with WinXP microsoft introduced
user accounts into the consumer windows operating system. The newer
systems like WinVista and Win7 will try to default you to a limited
user account to keep you from doing anything really bad to your
computer. It also protects your system from the inadvertant
installation of nasty things like adware, malware, and viruses. I'm
not saying that I agree with it, but there it is. Coming from a 9X
operating system this is probably all very new to you. Look for
something called user accounts in your control panel. Check there to
see if your user account is a limited one or an administrator's
account. If you want admin rights to your pc available without
switching back and forth between user accounts then make the
appropriate changes there. Word of warning, you will lose that
additional layer of protection afforded you by the limited user
account. There is also a feature called UAC (User Account Control)
built into WinVista and Win7. In 7 you can scale back the amount of
control exerted over your computer by the windows operating system.
Once again (warning) if you make changes to your UAC you will lose the
layer of protection afforded to you by that feature.
