Subject: VTMH Seminar Series: September 2015 - 'Our Voices'
VTMH Seminar Series
Wednesday 16th September
Presented by Silvana Izzo and Shehani DeSilva
A community development project; building relationships and creating resources to support carer wellbeing, health literacy, social inclusion and culturally sensitive models of care and recovery, using an exploratory, participatory and co-production approach.
Five individual short films were created via this project, led by VTMH and supported by 11 funding partners and are available online and as DVDs. All five films are available in Somali, Dari, Arabic, Vietnamese and Turkish language, with additional options of English subtitles and English voice over versions. The films have a free state-wide distribution agenda and have been presented in trainings, workshops, conferences and community gatherings across the state and nationally, with the films carers co presenting and facilitating these events in ongoing capacity.
The Our Voices digital stories project has created a platform for carers from diverse backgrounds to speak directly and powerfully about their experiences in seeking support and navigating mental health services, in managing their own wellbeing in the role of caring for a family member with a mental illness and in negotiating the ideas and the experience of personal isolation and community stigma. The stories concurrently speak a language of hope and a call to action - supporting the continued growth of community capital and promoting inclusive and diverse recovery models.Click here for more information and registration.
