Dear family. friends and acquaintances,

It's hard to believe but Picture the Homeless (PTH) is 15 years old!!. In October of 2007, I led a group of shelter residents from the Open Door, a drop-in center in Manhattan to a Picture the Homeless housing campaign meeting. As many of you know I spent 10 months in the Open Door and began organizing the residents to challenge management to improve the facility and services being delivered. One of the problems we faced was securing stable affordable housing upon exiting shelter. The group I was organizing wanted to make a trip to Albany to make our voices heard among the elected officials deciding our fate. At the same time I started receiving many emails talking about the same issue from Sam at Picture the Homeless. I suggested to the group, that we attend a meeting at PTH and the rest is history.

I became a member of PTH in the fall of 2007 and that is where I firmly planted my feet and honed my organizing skills. In February 2009 I was one of 4 PTH members that traveled to Miami to learn about a group called Take Back the Land (TBTL). I met Max Rameau on that particular trip and today we still collaborate some 4 years after taking TBTL national in 2010. I consider Max a mentor and a major influence on who I am and how I think about organizing and many other issues. I may never have met Max Rameau without PTH empowering me to travel to Miami.

PTH has a track record of elevating and empowering voices of the homeless and formerly homeless. Hence, I am honored to be on the host committee for the 15th anniversary gala. The honor of host committee member comes with some responsibilities. Mainly helping to raise funds for PTH to continue their great work.

Therefore, I am asking you to consider purchasing a ticket to the gala which takes places October 23rd.
If you cannot attend please consider making a donation by visiting the PTH website at www.picturethehomeless.org. If this message has inspired you to purchase a ticket or make a donation please indicate such by adding HC_RR on the memo line.

In solidarity,
Rob

Hard to believe, but it's been fifteen years since two men living in Bellevue Men's Shelter held their first meeting for homeless folks who were mad as hell at how this city was mistreating them, and ready to fight back!

Since then, Picture the Homeless has been building power for people experiencing homelessness. We've been getting good laws passed and bad policies abolished. We've helped completely change the conversation around homelessness in New York City, from a blame-the-victim discussion of individual pathology and dysfunction to a systemic analysis of homelessness as a function of an out-of-control housing market.

So we hope you'll save the date: on October 23rd, we'll have a gala anniversary celebration. We'll celebrate our victories, dance the night away, and honor the people who helped get us here.

Date: October 23, 2014
Time: 6-10PM
Location: NYC Fire Museum/ 278 Spring Street, New York NY 10013
