Global poverty and global homelessness cannot be adequately addressed by local, domestic groups acting alone. That's why we've supported the work of the South African Shackdwellers' Movement (
Abahlali baseMjondolo) for years, and why we've been so outraged at the recent violence aimed at them.
Just last weekend two shack dwellers died in fires in an Abahlali baseMjondolo organised settlement at Foreman Road, Durban. Disturbingly, this tragedy occurred the day after Abahlali baseMjondolo (AbM) in the city of Durban, held a demonstration against to end political repression and what they call "the politic of blood". Earlier this year, on 29th September, an AbM branch chair Thuli Ndlovu was assassinated in her house. Thuli was gunned down, while her daughter studied in another room. Her shooting was foreshadowed by numerous death threats and similar killings in KwaZulu-Natal.
