The best thing I discovered with pootle, was not pootle itself, but
the existence of this wonderful translation toolkit:
http://translate.sourceforge.net/wiki/toolkit/index
and their wonderful developers, of course!
It's been written in python and some tools are very useful and
powerful. I think we should package it and use it (when necessary). It
provides an awful lot of converters, among which there is one that
allows to create pot files from html files (and conversely, html files
from po files).
As you probably guessed this tool can make localisation of the default
browser home page and of the installation help. I've tested it and
it's good. I would definitely use it for localisation of these kind of
files.
Then we should discuss whether the rpm should install all the locale
versions of these html files, and the right one be linked through the
URL tag of a desktop file (solution which I prefer), or whether the
rpm should recognise the locale of the system and replace the original
ones with those files in the matching locale.
If you have time, have a look.

translated among other docs. And i think devnet won't object that this
is somerhing the doc project could use

Yes, didouph, you stole the words from my mouth! There's also a text
to po converter, which we could use to make more practical the
translation of summaries and descriptions of spec files.

I wish we had the staff to do it...right now, there are 3 of us
working on ALL documentation. Everyone else has fled our little
group. It seems we don't have motivated documentation people in
pclinuxos :(

Ok...I've got a project started for this...what I'm attempting to do
is to port the Installation Guide, User Guide, and LiveCD Guides from
.92 versions over to 2007. The project is housed here:

This project has an xml backend for interface translation and
automatic detection as to what language the interface is switched to.
That means, when you switch it will switch the documentation to
whatever language it is translated in. We've tested what we've got
done with dutch I believe and it works quite nice.
The problem is, I'm pressed because I took over the entire project and
can't work on porting like I did in the beginning...so it's stagnant
now. However, if you guys want to use it for translation guides or
anything else...feel free. I can setup anyone with access in the
backend. Let me know and I'll make it so.
