Some updates about what I've been doing lately

Hello, everybody!

This last week I've put aside my translation work, to focus on the
localisation of html/xhtml files.

First I'll open and close a bracket. Two weeks ago I've sent my work
on mklivecd, redo-mbr, liveusb and so on to gettinther and he promised
to give it a look this week if I reminded it to him. He hasn't given
any feedback for now, but I believe he's very busy, he disappeared
from everywhere. So I still hope to hear from him soon.

I've mentioned in an old discussion something about the translate-
toolkit pack
(see http://translate.sourceforge.net/wiki/toolkit/index)
It's very powerful and can have many purposes. What I was interested
in the most, though, is the possibility to translate html files by
means of po files. The maximum we can ask for this particular job. The
html file has to be well formed, but tidying up messy html files is
easy with tidy (available in pclos repo).

I've built an rpm package and some of the dependencies if you want to
try it out.

To install the rpms you should enable the testing repo and first
install
-enchant
-libtidy0.99
-python-dateutil
-python-lxml
-python-psycho

Then, from the tarball I've provided, you should install
-python-enchant
-python-Levenshtein
-python-iniparse
-python-vobject
-python-tidy

Finally you can install the translate-toolkit

I've already tested the commands html2po and po2html onto index.html
and Install.html with the results you can see here:

To me it's just amazing. Now that I have these packages available,
I'll try to implement the translation of the home page and the
installation guide in an rpm.

part of basesystem or pclinuxos base ... can't remember the name for it !

Good, I need to find out where they are. Inside the rpm, should we put
these html files already built or should they be obtained through
original template and po files during the rpm building process?

If the documentation project was in a good shape, I would ask them to
prepare html files linked to the home page to provide an essential
guide. We already have the installation guide, but it would be very
useful to add the KDE guide (which appeared in the pclos magazine) and
a guide for the control center tools, especially internet connection.
Indeed it's difficult to follow an online guide when you're not
connected to the internet.

Sandor, you can safely translate the home page, but I don't know if
the installation guide will stay the same, so that is up to you.

i would recommand a double change

since the system is currently optimised to run only one locale at once. We should put all files in a new RPM dépendant on the main one. This rpm would hold the basic files but would also implement a "localized" string in the desktop file pointing to our translated html and also modify the setup so the system should point to the appropriate "start page" depending on the locale set!

a good organisation would be to add sub folder to the one containing the quick start guide and index files . those subfolders, named by locale code, would hold the translation. Desktop files accept a per locale action thus dépending on the language settings, these might point to a different file in those subfolders.

the advantage of such method is that it may allow the installation of files in "various" languages without overwriting or backing up original/default files.

With desktop files the job is easy, I'm not sure about a localised
home page. The start page package is indexhtml, but it just copies the
three files needed, there must be a patch in the browser packages to
point at it, so I'll have to look into them. Going to work now.

the default html file could also list all languages and/or have a javascript picking the locale and point to the browser's one when page is opened !

Or /usr/share/doc/HTML/index.html cound be a symlink.
We can even use the standard 'alternatives' mechanism -

make a script that drops a "small" file called doc.loc.rc in ~/ containing the locale code
get javaScript to read from it the locale to use !

now i remember that the /usr/share/doc/HTML/index.html symlink was the initial option but with small modification in the navigators settings to look for a ~/.index.html wich would be a ymlink, driven by a script picking the locale on user creation and adding it to the default user setting and being moddifyed on locale pickup !

sounds complicated but pretty pclinuxos flavored (tricky in the background / simple in the foreground)

this can be achieved by changing settings in /etc/skels and that is l10n not i18n

Guys, I've run a little test. I've opened My computer.desktop and
changed the exec line like this:
Exec=konsole;konqueror --profile devices system:/

(instead of Exec=konqueror --profile devices system:/)

What happened was that first the konsole window was opened, and when I
closed it, konqueror popped up. Basivcally what I wasn't sure about
was whether more then one could be executed. Since this is the case,
we could just run a small bash script prior to the browser execution
which directs the symlink to the user's locale start page, if existing
(english, if not).

Can the Exec line also be localised like Exec[lang_code]= ?

PS. didouph, I've probably understood what you mean, but I really
don't know how to do it.
david, I've tested the lang attribute in html pages, believing
it was working nicely like in GDM/KDM greeters, but unfortunately it's
not like that.
