I am a member of the Legal IT group in LinkedIn. There has been a
heated discussion going on for about a month now, regarding the use of
Cloud based solutions by law firms. The comments ranged from costs/
savings, staff training, security, risks versus rewards, breaches of
security at Sony, Citibank, etc., and a lawyer's duty of
confidentiality and their duty to protect clients' information. Some
were using the Cloud just for storage (off-site backup) while others
were using Cloud based software and working within the Cloud
environment. One person stopped using it because of the cost.

Are any of you currently using Cloud based solutions? Anyone
considering using it in the future?

How do you like it? Did it meet or exceed or fall short of your
expectations?

Any other comments?

I have used Carbonite for backups for about three years, after about 20
years of various hardware systems including 5 1/4 and 3 1/2 in disks in each
matter file, tapes, zip drives, CD-RW's and an external hard drive. It was
advertised as being secure and I have no reason to disbelieve the
advertising. When the hard drive on my desktop computer died, I was
surprised at how easy it was to download onto my laptop what I required to
keep working, and to restore the data onto my new hard drive when the
desktop was returned, although I was required to go through the process of
reinstalling my programmes in order to make them work. The version that I
have backs up only one computer. However, I keep very little data on my
laptop and it was no difficulty to use Microsoft Backup to back up that data
onto my desktop once a week, from where it is continuously backed up along
with everything else on that hard drive.
