To Dan's many Friends,
Here are the details of
Dan's bicycle accident last Tue.:
Dan Crain was hit by
a car. He shared with me and others it was his fault. However,
when I listened him tell the story, it seemed to me, it was not entirely his
fault. It sounded like the female driver was driving too fast, and he says
he remembers that he never heard any break sounds.
He had his first of
2 necessary surgeries yesterday.
He said it would be from
12 noon to about 4 pm.
Actually, it was from
10:30am till 5:30pm; which made his Sister Sandy & I anxious. We were
then told the doctor would give us a call. I thought, we're right here,
ten feet away, what's up with the "call"?? So I called the
nurse and asked. She said the doctor had gotten a call for an
emergency surgery.
An hour later, at
6:30 he called to inform us about the added difficulty in removing a bone
fragment that was just a hair away from severing the spinal cord!!
We can all pause, and
thank God that Dan will be able to walk and ride his bike again!!!
Those first hours with him
in ICU that evening, he was pushing the IV pain medication
button about every 3 minutes, although it would only dispense every
10. He had an excellent male nurse who decided to give him a morphine
injection. He was chomping the ice chips faster than I could scoop them
in.
Today, Friday, his Sister Sandy
was with him in the morning. Said he'd already eaten a bowel of oatmeal and half
an omlet! (They already have him on a full regular diet!)
I was there from 2 until
3:30. Jim Cook & his daughter were there around 2:30 till
3.
Although still experiencing
pain, & still very fatigued, he appreciated us being
there. I was glad he drank the entire pint of fresh
carrot-apple juice with the added protein powder, and liquid
minerals I'd made
him.
The details of the story, from
the beginning, as he told me are: He was traveling up Newport
Coast, going west, from the Irvine side, on the Orange County Rebel Rider Tue.
night ride. Time: 6:45pm. About half-way up the hill, he was crossing over
the lane where the 73 Toll road traffic merges onto Newport Coast
Blvd.
After he'd already started
to cross over, he looked back..by then it was too late, he was hit by a
female driving a Range Rover, knocking him off his bike. He never
lost consciousness. One shoe stayed on the pedal, and the other shoe was
found about 50 ft. away. He said she was going fast, and he never heard
any breaking sounds. Said the ride in the ambulance was very bumpy, and
they could not give him any pain medication. Shortly thereafter, he was
medicated 3 Xs.
I received phone calls
from both Rick Burneson & Ken Campbell that Dan had been in an accident
& went to Mission Hospital.
When I arrived at the Emergency
Room waiting room, I spotted the welcome faces of Paul &
Elise. Gradually we were joined by Tom Parks, David Slayton, Chuck
Chen and several other cycling friends...so many, they took us all to a
separate waiting room, until Dan was finished with the diagnstic MRI's, & CT
scans. Next, we all accompanied him to his room on the 3rd floor and hung
out with him until around 10:pm, (us Bikies take a long time
saying saying good-bye, no matter how many hours we've ridden together that
day).
I heard the nurse
telling Dan, "You are on strict bed rest! That means do NOT move!
You need to stay on your back per orders from the doctor.
Nothing by mouth, as you may be having surgery." I'm sure none of us had
any idea of how close he was to his spine being severed, and never biking
again.
His 2nd surgery will
be next Friday, when they'll be adding stabelizing rods. He'll
be staying in Mission Hospital; located at the 5 & Crown Valley until
then.
These days will be
tough for Dan. He appreciates visits, but please be sensitive to not
causing more fatugue. He has a grateful attitude, but sure is in a
lot of intense pain.
After this is
all over, I'd like to have a Thank-You Party for the doctors who helped save Dan
from a severed spinal cord!!!!
Lookin' UP,
Anny
