**First, make sure smart guides are enabled. (To check, go to the
'View' menu on the application frame bar and see if 'Smart Guides' has
a check next to it. If not, click on it to enable.)

01. Use the 'Line Segment Tool' (The shortcut is: \) (or preferred
drawing tool) to create a line.

02. Start your second line at the end point of this first line. (A
small smart guide will appear with the word 'anchor' when directly
over the end point.)

(You should now have two lines that share a common end point.)

03. Use the 'Direct Selection Tool' (White Arrow) (The shortcut is: A)
to marque select ONLY the common endpoints.

(The end point anchor will become colored when selected. Compare this
against the lines' other end points which should still be white.)

04. With the common anchor point selected, go to the top of the
application frame bar and select Object > Path > Join.

05. A dialogue box will appear asking what kind of joined point to
create. Make sure 'Corner' is selected and select 'Okay'.

06. Your two lines should now be joined into one line with a mitered
edge.

Enjoy!
