Hi everyone,
We are very excited to kick off POV's 30th anniversary season on PBS on June 26! Our season starts with a three week arc of films offering thought-provoking and distinct perspectives on lives irrevocably changed by the Syrian war and refugee crisis.
On Monday, June 26 at 9 PM ET,
DALYA'S OTHER COUNTRY by POV alum Julia Meltzer will be our season premiere. The film is an intimate look at a family navigating a new life in Los Angeles after leaving Aleppo as the Syrian war escalated. Dalya was 13 when she and her mother Rudayna moved to the U.S. DALYA'S follows her family from 2013 to 2016 as she navigates high school and comes into her own identity as a young Syrian, Muslim woman in America, while Rudayna finds her own way, focusing on her education and adjusting to cultural differences in these two vastly different realities.
Following DALYA'S OTHER COUNTRY are two short films. First, we're happy to present
FROM DAMASCUS TO CHICAGO by first time filmmakers Colleen Cassingham (a recent POV intern!) and Alex Lederman. The film follows two young siblings resettled in Chicago as they enroll in a dance class and their family finds joy and stability in a new city. Also on June 26, we're excited to broadcast the Oscar-nominated short
4.1 MILES by Daphne Matziaraki, which tells the story of a Greek coast guard caught in the middle of the refugee crisis, attempting to save thousands of migrants from drowning in the Aegean Sea.
