Stray dog turned WWI mascot, subject of new animated film, echoes soldiers’ bonds with dogs around the world
A little more than one hundred years after his fateful encounter with a young soldier on the streets of New Haven, Connecticut, the animated film Sgt. Stubby: An American Hero tells the tale of Stubby, a brindle and white pit bull-type dog, and Robert Conroy, the soldier who found him scrounging for scraps near a military camp.
The two formed a fast bond, and Stubby learned the bugle call, the soldiers’ drills and even a doggie version of a salute.... Keep reading

Shelters and rescues can offer older animals another shot at love
Wednesday was National Pet Day! A day to highlight the unconditional love pets bring to our lives and encourage the adoption of shelter pets. Finding new homes for adoptable older cats and dogs, however, is not always an easy task.
When Nate’s family became homeless, so did he. Last fall, the 10-year-old black Lab arrived at the Wisconsin Humane Society’s (WHS) Racine shelter when his family could no longer care for him. Investigating Equine Cruelty
Attending Animal Care Expo 2018? Space remains in the May 14th learning lab: Investigating Equine Cruelty. The full-day lab consists of classroom instruction, scenario-based role play, and hands-on training.
The classroom component will teach attendees how to evaluate common conditions and their potential causes, investigate complaints, conduct interviews, and execute warrants.
Horses will be on site for instruction surrounding assessment of health and living conditions; identification of equine behavior; basic horse sense and handling; and proper abuse evidence collection, packaging and reporting. » Learn more
