Hi All,

I’ve included everyone on this for quick action because it’s time sensitive: where did the Deering Oaks Bicycle Repair Station go and more importantly how do we get it reinstalled within the next week or so? See attached photo showing where it was.

A little background in case you don’t know the details, the Parkside Neighborhood Association (PNA) funded the equipment and installation of both the Deering Oaks and Bramhall Square Bicycle Repair stations and adjacent bicycle hitches in 2021/2022.

Over time the repair stations and included bicycle hitches endured some wear, damage, and some of the tools went missing. In reaching out to the city we learned that neither for these nor any of the city funded bicycle repair stations elsewhere in Portland had money been set aside to provided needed repairs & maintenance from time to time.

So this year, PNA procured $6,000 to address repair and maintenance issues with the two stations in our neighborhood. We have replacement parts purchased and are in hand. These are ready for immediate use and on behalf of PNA, I have secured a representative of the station manufacturer (Dero) to help install parts for free—no cost to the city.

Additionally, we just received a $500 mini-grant from the Portland Sustainability Office to host a public bicycle repair workshop at the now missing Deering Oaks Bicycle Repair Station, scheduled for 10am-1pm Saturday 25 October 2025 along with mechanics from the Parkside business Gorham Bike & Ski. There’s our urgency.

I hope someone on this with more information can help provide a pathway to secure and reinstall the missing repair station asap. We need time to install the repair parts and we need to confirm the station will actually be there in order to continue to promote the event.

Presuming it wasn’t just stolen by a nefarious actor, and after we get it reinstalled, we can explore why such an important feature in our neighborhood, funded by PNA went missing without PNA’s foreknowledge.

Cheers!

-Hans

Can you better explain what you are referring to.  Isn't the Parkside Neighborhood Assn suppose to be replacing it.

Hey All,

PNA + CoP installed this a few years ago. It was vandalized and broken, unfortunately. I’m sad to hear that there was no support earmarked by the city for this sort of infrastructure. I am glad that PNA had some forethought about it, but it seems that there wasn’t one entity who was particularly designated as responsible. ?! Is this something Gorham Bike and Ski (as a Parkside Bike business) could take on?)

Bruce, what are your thoughts? How can we as PBPAC support you to nudge this along?

Thanks to everyone for attention to this matter, especially Hans for sounding the alarm.

Emma

The Maine Medical Neighborhood Advisory Council Caring Communities Grant Program provided $6,000 to Fund the repair and maintain two bicycle repair stations and provide neighborhood bicycle hitches to meet the demands of a predominately non-motorized commuting and recreating citizenry.  In addition, this grant application requests funding for two bicycle hitches to replace those previously installed that were destroyed. Through these funds PNA will be able to manage providing fully functional bicycle repair stations.

The check was delivered to the neighborhood association a couple of months ago.

I am at a loss as to why Hans is suggesting they are missing.  He told me the PNA was going to acquire and install the new bike repair stations.

It seems clear from the email Hand forwarded that the money was for repair and continued maintenance of the repair stations, not the complete 100% replacement of them.

One of them appears to have disappeared; hopefully the city removed it since the tools and pump where broken or something, but, the PNA has the replacement tools, and has a re-opening event planned....  So the question is, is the stand somewhere, or was it stolen by someone?

Hopefully it's at the public works garage.
