This morning on my way into work I talked to someone who was getting their car pulled onto a wrecker. They rear-ended another car stopped at the crosswalk in front of the Flashing Beacon at Frederic Street. There is no stop line at that location and the person did not see the flashing lights or note the car had stopped. They paid the price by totaling their car (but was unhurt).
Then when I got to work my co-worker told me his truck is in the shop after getting rear ended while waiting to turn out of the roundabout onto Deering(?) Street.
Alas.

Rear ended waiting to turn OUT of the roundabout? So he stopped to yield to someone entering?

Or possibly your co-worker was yielding to someone in the crosswalk?

Be careful of the low sun angles everyone- no matter what vehicle you're navigating, or even on foot...

Your shadow points towards those who can't see you!

My car was rear ended a couple of years ago at a flashing beacon on Washington Ave. I saw some people waving and I wasn’t sure if they were crossing so I stopped, and someone plowed into me. It turned out the people waving were not crossing.

That was the second time I was rear ended at a crosswalk. The first was a couple years earlier, on Cumberland Ave. at Chestnut St. The sun was low and the other driver said he couldn’t see me.

Oh gawd. In Motorists in California run reds to avoid getting rear ended. They also wait  a few seconds to go at the green just in case someone is flying through a red at the intersection.
Thanks

I wondered if the roundabout crash was a pedestrian crossing situation. Too many times, other motorists are not paying sufficient attention.

We have a huge problem on Main Street in Westbrook with drivers passing others on the right when the one in front is stopped for a pedestrian crossing. Some people on our Westbrook Safe Mobility & Access Committee have had multiple close calls as the "pedestrian" (or wheelchair user) in these situations.

Speaking of WSMAC and low sun, we have started a blog, and I just did a draft of an article about low sun. We haven't published it yet, because the pedestrian part hasn't been written, but you can read the draft here if you like. Suggestions are welcome, or even offers to write the pedestrian part. :-) (I'm busy until after the election.)

Excellent article and photos John!
This is definitely an important topic to bring up/ raise awareness at this time of year.
Thank you!

I've been thinking about the low sun angle more this year than I have previously.

I'm excited for this blog post to be out so that I can share it!

I like that the peice starts with motorists, puts responsibility on them, and then speaks about how cyclists' may protect themselves.

One thing I might add is that cyclists should take care on multi use paths, and indeed rural shoulders, to avoid running into walkers, runners, children & dogs.  We're not immune to sun blindness!  Especially as e-bikes become more common, and multi use paths are being increasingly used for transportation, it's important for those of us riding on them to treat pedestrians with the care we wish to be treated with by motorists.

Good sunglasses & a cycling cap with a larger brim can help, but, just like motorists, a slower speed is best!

Thanks, Denise!

Any suggestions from this group on the pedestrian directed content? I bike much more then I walk.
