We Need You, to support LD 730!

Hi Damon,
Education is at the heart of what we do to make Maine a better place for people to walk and bike. BCM offers programs for all ages and abilities to support Mainers recreating outside and choosing active transportation, but traffic safety education is not currently required in school. We believe that education in our schools is essential to put kids on the path to being safe and responsible walkers, bikers, and drivers.
LD 730, the Traffic Safety Education Act, would require one hour of age appropriate education per year between Grade 2 and 12, starting with pedestrian behavior and moving towards driving behavior. By providing students basic traffic safety education, we ensure that everyone has a common understanding of the law and best practices for using our public ways.

DEI Statement: The Bicycle Coalition of Maine is committing to advancing our equity and inclusion efforts. The Coalition is prioritizing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in three focus areas: self-education, community engagement/outreach, and event structure for 2022-2023. We welcome community members and visitors of Maine—Wabanaki Territory—from all backgrounds to join the Coalition. Our most outstanding achievement will be that everyone who joins the Coalition or attends our events will feel respected and valued.
