Hi PBPAC, this is a great bill to support in order to help promote safer and more sustainable school transportation.

Help us support Traffic Safety Education in schools
We Need You, to support LD 730!
Hi Damon,

Education is at the heart of what we do to make Maine a better place for people to walk and bike. BCM offers programs for all ages and abilities to support Mainers recreating outside and choosing active transportation, but traffic safety education is not currently required in school. We believe that education in our schools is essential to put kids on the path to being safe and responsible walkers, bikers, and drivers.

LD 730, the Traffic Safety Education Act, would require one hour of age appropriate education per year between Grade 2 and 12, starting with pedestrian behavior and moving towards driving behavior. By providing students basic traffic safety education, we ensure that everyone has a common understanding of the law and best practices for using our public ways.

This act is scheduled for a hearing on March 23, 2023 at 1p.m. in the Education and Cultural Affairs Committee, and your voice can help! You can use our testimony template to submit testimony on the bill either in person or via Zoom. And you can reach out to people you know in Maine’s education profession to encourage them to submit testimony in support of this bill.

Read BCM's testimony for more information on the bill and if you have additional questions, contact Jim Tasse j...@bikemaine.org.
Sincerely,
JIm Tassé
