Friends of Franklin Street,
Portland’s Franklin Street was home to some of our city’s first communities. Over 50 years ago the neighborhoods along Franklin Street were demolished to make way for high-speed traffic. Once vibrant communities became a no-man’s-land. Franklin Street has been a scar on urban fabric, with social and economic consequences, for decades.
20 years ago, the people of Portland rejected this auto-centric misuse of Franklin Street, and came together to craft a vision of Franklin Street rewoven into the urban fabric of our city. The 2015 master plan, unanimously adopted by the city council, went unimplemented by a hostile city manager.
In 2025 city planners embarked on an effort to renew the Franklin redesign plan. On Thursday, September 10th, they will be sharing their draft design proposals, and soliciting feedback to inform the final design.
It is essential that everyone who envisions a safer, more walkable, vibrant Franklin Street attends this presentation and workshop at Rines Auditorium at the main library at 5:30pm.
Please join me, members of the Franklin Reclamation Authority (FRA), Phase 1 and Phase 2 advisory committees, and participants in the current Reimagining Franklin Street events. Your voices have made the difference at each juncture in this process. They will be most impactful at this meeting on Sept 10.
