Terrible on all fronts...

I know nothing about the victim but it may very well be a working person who cannot afford an automobile and commutes via bicycle.  May or may not be an immigrant as well.  These are classes of bicyclists that seldom have time to advocate for better and safer bicycling environments but are often hurt the most by the lack of public investment (resisted of course more often than not by suburban single-family homeowners who see little point in spending public money on such things).

P.S. The irony is that there are MANY suburban single-family homeowners who love bicycling, even if just for recreation, and want to see better infrastructure even if it means more taxes and/or causing other public goods to go unaddressed to pay for it.  Unfortunately often they are a minority in their communities.

And to add, the frequency of hit-and-runs this year has continued to grow, about a half dozen statewide in 2025.

There have now been 191 cyclist-involved crashes in Maine in 2025, this marks the 5th fatality. 197-pedestrian involved crashes, and 17 fatal.

BCM will be organizing a state-wide day of action on November 16th for World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims. This is entirely unacceptable.
