Hi Folks,
This year's District meetings are nearly upon us!

A district meeting is a meeting hosted by your City Councilor, with the City Manager & staff in attendance.  They're a great opportunity to discuss issues with your city councilor, with staff present to answer questions.

If  you're unsure what District you're in, this map might help (I think it's the most current?).
This page has details about attending- all but District 4 are virtual & available over zoom.

You could bring up our sidewalk snow clearance letter, last year's ask for a Bicycle & Pedestrian coordinator & what's happened about the "better bikeways initiative" (which was initially supposed to kick off this summer, but hasn't seemed to due to lack of staff(?)) or any of a myriad of other issues.

It's a great opportunity to ask for things like hyper local traffic calming measures or changes to intersections- Have a problem intersection?  Show up with a solution & ask why they can't do it!  Have crumbling sidewalks?  Streets with no bike lanes?  Commutes you have to drive because the roads are so unpleasant?  Time to put staff in the hot seat!

In order by Date we have:

*October 24th: District 4 (Andrew Zarro) Ocean Ave Elementary school, 150 Ocean Ave, 6 PM
*October 27th: District 5 (Mark Dion), Virtual, 6:30 PM
*November 10th: District 3 (Tae Chong & predecessor, TBD), Virtual, 6:30 PM
*November 15th: District 2 (Victoria Pelletier), Virtual, 6:30 PM
*November 30: District 1 (Anna Trevorrow), Virtual, 6:30 PM

Lets show up & push for equitable transportation solutions that serve everyone, not just those willing & able to afford & drive cars!

Hi Folks,

District 3's meeting is Tomorrow night!  It's hosted by the current councilor, Tae Chong & the future Councilor, Regina Phillips, should  be there as well.

District 2 has their meeting on the 15th!  Hosted by Councilor Pelletier.

https://www.portlandmaine.gov/730/Annual-District-Meetings

Attend!  Agitate for better sidewalk snow clearance, for equitable traffic calming measures, for street lights to be fixed in a timely manner!

It's hosted by the current councilor, Tae Chong, but, the future Councilor, Regina Phillips, should be there as well.

If anyone goes, or has been to either of the October meetings, feel free to reply with your experiences & anything you might have learned from staff.

Notes from District 1:

Some minor updates re- Franklin Street- there's going to be some meeting about setting the Agenda for the Sustainability & Transportation Committee in the coming year- it will be an option at that meeting.  It seems like reviewing the options for 2023's agenda for that committee & submitting our thoughts on their priorities might be a good idea.  Will keep my eyes peeled.

Very brief, final overtime question about the Status of improving sidewalk snow clearing capabilities:

Just from Ethan Hipple, so, no word on expanding their capabilities re-equipment...  Really I'd rather be putting the Manager on the spot vs. poor Ethan- ah well.

Paraphrasing him slightly:

"We have added a few new routes, for instance to the homeless services center.  Though we're mostly focused on improving quality.   This year we have re-allocated some crew so we will have more people available for sidewalk snow clearance this winter, and expect it to go well.  We're responsive to reports either by phone or See Click Fix of sidewalks that have been plowed in by city plows, contractors or individuals"

I emailed Councilor Trevorrow with a link to our latest snow plow ask, providing further context  immediately following the meeting.
