Maine’s U.S. senators, both of whom have advocated for increased federal investment in public transportation, praised the grant in the release.
“Meeting the transportation needs of Cumberland County residents as well as its many summer visitors requires a public transit system that is safe, reliable and prepared for the future,” said Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee. She said the funds will help Metro retire older vehicles and continue delivering “safe, high-quality service.”
Sen. Angus King, an independent who caucuses with Democrats, emphasized transit’s role in supporting the state’s economy and quality of life. Public transit, he said, helps workers access jobs, families stay connected and visitors travel affordably.
“This investment in the Portland bus fleet will help ensure Maine people can get where they need to, and visitors can also benefit from this critical service for years to come,” King said.
