Portland Police to Conduct Enhanced Traffic Safety Enforcement Operation
Increased traffic enforcement is one of the City’s Vision Zero Action Plan objectives to reduce pedestrian incidents
PORTLAND, Maine – On, Monday, August 3, 2026, the Portland Police Department will conduct an enhanced traffic safety operation aimed at improving roadway safety for everyone who lives, works, and travels in Portland. Increased traffic enforcement is one of the City’s objectives listed in its Vision Zero Action Plan to reduce pedestrian incidents. This operation will be followed by increased traffic enforcement in the weeks and months ahead.
Throughout the day, additional officers will be deployed in neighborhoods and along roadways across Portland, with a particular focus on locations where traffic complaints, crashes and unsafe driving behaviors have been identified. Officers will also patrol throughout the city to address traffic violations that put motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists at risk.
Enforcement efforts will focus on violations such as speeding, distracted driving, failure to yield, stop sign and traffic signal violations, impaired driving and other hazardous driving behaviors.
“Our goal is simple: to reduce crashes and make our streets safer for everyone,” said Chief Mark Dubois. “Traffic laws exist to protect people, and we hope this initiative serves as a reminder for all drivers to slow down, stay alert, and share the road responsibly.”
This enforcement effort is part of the City of Portland's Vision Zero initiative, a citywide commitment to eliminating traffic fatalities and serious injuries. By focusing enforcement in areas with a history of crashes, speeding complaints and other hazardous driving behaviors, the Portland Police Department is supporting the City's broader strategy to make Portland's streets safer for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.
The Portland Police Department receives traffic concerns from residents on a regular basis, and this initiative is part of the department’s ongoing commitment to addressing those concerns through proactive enforcement and education.
The department encourages motorists to:
Obey posted speed limits,
Eliminate distractions while driving,
Yield to pedestrians at crosswalks,
Stop for red lights and stop signs,
Never drive while impaired, and
Watch for bicyclists and pedestrians, especially in busy areas.
The department encourages bicyclists and pedestrians to stay alert and follow the rules of the road.
Safe driving is everyone’s responsibility. By making smart choices behind the wheel, as well as when walking or cycling, we can work together to prevent crashes and keep Portland’s streets safe for all.
