City Receives $2.1 Million Safe Streets and Roads for All Grant to Support Safety Projects Along Brighton Avenue

The City of Portland is pleased to announce that it has received a $2,120,000 Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) federal grant to support a multitude of roadway, pedestrian, and bicycle safety projects as part of the Brighton Avenue Safety and Demonstration Project.

The grant will fund a six-month demonstration of proven safety countermeasures along one mile of Brighton Avenue, between City Hospital Drive and Wayside Road. The project will implement quick-build, high-impact interventions, including roadway reconfiguration, restriping, a center turn lane, buffered bicycle lanes with green conflict markings, delineators, planters, improved lighting, and vehicle feedback signs. Pavement leveling will also be completed to ensure visibility and proper installation of pilot elements.

“This funding will help advance Portland’s Vision Zero program, which aims to eliminate traffic fatalities and serious injuries within two decades," said City Manager Danielle West. “This demonstration project will enhance roadway safety for all users while providing valuable data to inform long-term transportation improvements.”

“I’d like to thank Senator Susan Collins’ office for their assistance in helping us secure these funds,” said Mayor Mark Dion. “These funds will help bring necessary improvements and safety measures to Brighton Avenue, and help us ensure greater safety for pedestrians and bicyclists. Furthermore, these enhancements will help inform us as we work to make other safety improvements across the city.”

The project will include a public education campaign, pre-and post-demonstration multimodal counts and speed studies, and a findings report to guide Vision Zero initiatives and future capital investments. The goal is to assess the effectiveness of these measures in reducing roadway fatalities and serious injuries for all users.

Conceptual design is planned to begin in fall 2026, with final design and installation expected by June 2027.

Any improvements to Brighton are certainly welcome. I wonder if anyone has more details on this project? And any info on when there may be public meetings or other opportunity for input?
