Dear Chair Stanley and members of the Planning Board:
In your consideration of the technical manual I would like you to include standards for widening sidewalks. As you know, bloated roadways cause all sorts of problems from speeding, to pollution, to safety, to lost economic development opportunities. Unfortunately, anytime this matter comes up, the impracticality of moving the storm drains is used to shoot it down. However, there are design and engineering solutions that could allow for widening the sidewalks while keeping the storm drains where they are. And the good news is that it is not a matter of inventing the wheel as there are numerous good, better, and best practices available.
So while I totally understand why some people might prefer paint, there are certain contexts where a road narrowing would reap far greater rewards. I want us to be ready.
Thank you,
Zack
