sf.sbcglobal.net doesn't seem to be viable. i got an email saying I'm
supposed to use this server. All i get is an error message that Ns can't
find it.

Try news.sf.sbcglobal.net as directed on the e-mail referenced page.
You probably won't be able to post at that server, but you can download
messages posted to news.pacbell.net. Next week that option will be gone.

but so far is read only and won't access binaries. Ain't this fun ???

I went to the page and set it up as per instruction. As "news.sf.sbcglobal.net". I reconfiged
to "news.pacbell.net" w/o any problems other then the usual. But thanks for the response.
