Hi there. I am brand new to this program and have hit a roadblock. I am trying to do the tutorials to where I use the Inpaint tool to erase parts of the photo. They said to hold down the key and it will give you options. When I hold down the inpaint tool aka bandaid, nothing shows. When I go to Edit and pull down the menu, Inpaint is not even highlighted. Any thoughts or suggestions?

To save time I am currently using an automated AI to reply to some posts on this forum. If any of "my" posts are wrong or appear to be total b*ll*cks they are the ones generated by the AI. You may find it helpful to watch the Affinity Photo - UI overview video tutorial, particularly the part beginning at about 3:18 that discusses the Tools panel & tool groups -- multiple tools that by default share the same icon position. To open their pop-out menu you can either "long click" on the icon or click on the small triangle at the lower right corner of the icon.

You can also Customize the Tools panel, replacing any of the tool groups with individual tool icons, reorder the tools however you like, or set the panel to use 2 or more columns if you need more room or just want an extra pair of color selectors.

Thank you for replying. Yes, I have reviewed the overview a few times. When it says to hold down on the bandaid icon and a small menu will pop up, that does not happen. So I cannot select the inpainting brush tool. There is no triangle at the bottom of the icon.

Hi, I am very new to Affinity, and have been trying out some tutorials. I find that I don't seem to have an Inpatient Tool. When I check on the menu, the inpaint tool is greyed out. Can someone please explain how I get access to this tool

The Inpainting Tool is only available in the Photo Persona (first icon on the top left of the interface right below the traffic lights). To access it, click on the small triangle near the Healing Brush Tool (the 6th icon counting from bottom) then select it from the popup menu (it's the second icon counting from bottom).

As JFisher said you must have a Pixel layer selected for it to work (not an adjustment or live filter layer or some other layer type). To identify which type of layer you are working with check the label inside parenthesis after the layer's name. If the layer you want to work with is identified as an (Image) layer, right click on it in the layers panel and select Rasterise. You can then use the Inpainting Brush on that layer.

I am trying to remove the tree with the help of the inpaint-filters. I have once achieved a very good result, but I do not remember how any more. I could not reproduce the result. I think the multi-scale version works best, but what are the optimal settings? I have tried many different settings, but I am not satisfied. Usually the inserted area is too light, or the red borders of the mask are visible.
Also, many times the preview looks really great, but the end-result does not.
What is the solution?

OK, thanks. The type of the drawing tool is the important thing. Anyway the brush tool is very bad for this kind of repair.
Meanwhile I also achieved several good and reproducible results. One with the morphological inpaint and I think I dilated the mask a little, but that took very long (at least 15 minutes). The multi-scale tool is much quicker. In Krita I used the ink-tool nr. 1, and I dilated the mask a litte.

As far as I remember, OpenCV doesn't have an implementation of inpainting in CUDA yet. But you can use another implementation that use OpenCV, like this one. You can eventually ask to add that as a new feature in the CUDA class, it will be helpful :) Just do a pull request in their repository if you are already familiar with OpenCV!

I found a model runwayml/stable-diffusion-inpainting and as I understood it was fine-tuned for inpaint task. But I guess SD3 would generate better results than old models.

I wonder how to use sd3 for inpaint task ? And if there is any way to fine-tune it in case of bad results but better than sd-inpainting model ?

Inpainting is a technique that Stable Diffusion only redraws part of an image. Specifically, you supply an image, draw a mask to tell which area of the image you would like it to redraw and supply prompt for the redraw. Then Stable Diffusion will redraw the masked area based on your prompt.

What would have taken a professional Photoshop user hours can be done in fewer than 10 steps using inpainting with Stable Diffusion. I hope you too can use this powerful tool to accomplish what previously think only a professional can do!

Good walkthrough, but what settings are you using for resize mode, masked content, inpaint area, resize to, denoising strength? These are the settings which make inpainting so confusing. Could you add a screenshot to show your settings for the first inpaint? Would be very helpful. Thanks.

Do i need to save the generated image and upload it and mask it again and change prompt and click generate button, and repeat the step until I achieve the desire output? This tutorial seems to imply that?? That is much longer and laborious than using photoshop!???
