As soon as an object is added to your project, you can change its type and other properties. By default, the type of all imported objects is Furniture. If you imported a door, window or staircase, select the proper object type in the Type and Representation dialog.
Imported objects may have references to one or several textures. You may be asked to locate a folder containing those textures. You can also opt to skip opening textures and simply use the materials from the built-in library.
The Split Object Instances option can split a compound object turning its parts into separate objects. An imported object will be added to your project as a group which includes all of the original parts.
Models can be split only when they are made out of several components. For example, some models are composed of several objects (a lamp, a computer, books, etc. on a table). If objects are made up of components, you can split them to remove or rearrange some of these components.
The second cube has the same material applied to all of its sides. When the option is off, an imported cube will have the original material on its sides. You will be able to apply another material to any side of the cube. If you import the cube again with the activated option, the imported cube will look exactly as before, but the 3D model will be changed. If you now apply a new material to any object side, all of the sides will change.
When you look at a cube, you can see any of its six sides. To visualize them, 3D software creates faces by one per each side. Faces allow the application of a plain color or texture to corresponding parts of an object making them visible. If there is a need to show the cube from inside as well, each side of the cube should have two faces: the inner and outer.
Most of the objects can be previewed only from the outside like a cube. To simplify 3D models of these objects, faces of invisible object parts may not be created. An open box (a cube with one side removed) should have both internal and external faces on all five sides because the internal parts should be visible as well. The lack of faces where they are needed, makes parts of an object invisible.
On the other hand, adding faces leads to increasing the 3D object complexity, which results in increasing the document size. A good practice would be the following. Normally, import objects with the Make all surfaces double-sided option deactivated. If a part of an imported object is invisible, reimport this object with the activated option.
When the Import lines option is deactivated, the app ignores lines. For example, such lines can be created in the SketchUp software using the Line tool. In many cases, the option should be switched off.
In Home Designer, you can import 3D symbols from different sources in the following file formats: .obj, .3ds, .skp, and .dae formats.
In addition to the file formats above, Home Designer Pro can import 3D .dwg and .dxf files, and both Home Designer Architectural and Home Designer Pro can import .stl files.
Chief Architect does not endorse or support the use of any symbols obtained from third party sources. We cannot guarantee the reliability nor can Chief Architect be held responsible for the content found on third party websites. Some editing of models in third party software may be required.
Please keep in mind that third party symbols with extremely high face counts may severely increase rendering times.
If you plan on downloading multiple symbols to bring into your design, you may find it helpful to create a folder in an easy-to-access location on your computer, such as your Desktop or Documents folder.
Anyway it put a wall on the "fixture layer".... How do I create a "Misc 1, Misc 2, etc" layer and move the item to a layer that doesn't interfere with the things on the HD Pro "Default Layers" and items in them?
That is a feature of Chief Architect Premier in that you can create custom layer names and move objects from one layer to another along with many other useful features. Home Designer Pro is exactly like Chief Premier but with a lot less useful features.
That is why you pay so much more for Chief. It rivals (and for home design beats the pants off) AutoCAD Architecture for about the same price. I used the later for many years and it's fine for commercial buildings but not very intuitive for houses. It took me about three hours to create a custom wall with quoins -- 10 seconds in HD.
Thanks, that makes things more clear...Though really strange they decided to have all imports sent to the "Interior Fixture Layer". You think they would have made a layer called "Import / Misc / User" Or something like that so you can turn them off without messing with the actual interior fixtures in the model? But all in all I am really liking this HD Pro!!! I just have to put in more time to get a better handle on things! I really appreciate everyone's help and advice, it is really helping the learning curve by not trying to do something the program is not set up to do.
I imported my stuff from Auto CAD from a civil engineer. The imported information ended up on the CAD Default layer. Searched the UI then the Web for about two hours. I found web sites referring to Home Designers Pro ability move things to another layer using several methods. Some of the features didn't even exist. The descriptions for the ones that did not allow layer creation. I'm finding HDPro utterly a royal pain in my rear. Layer support is basic functionality. Used for organization that allows one set of objects to stay away from other objects. I have some 100+ layers in a blank drawing so originally I literally guessed where it ended up. The UI is about the messiest unorganized pile I have ever seen on Mac, Windows or Linux.
Example:
I have a terrain layer. I want to create a layer for the road from the Civil Eng. (Road CE)r. Import it, rotate it (with precision). Correctly place it on the terrain (again with precision). Trace over it to create a HD Pro 'road'. This official road, of course, would be on the actual Road layer. Turn off the Road CE layer and do the same with drawings from the Architect. I don't see support for grouped objects (all the vids talk about grouping as a set of selected objects not a permanent group) so if everything ends up on the same layer then it will be impossible to adjust anything as all drawings will be on the same layer. it will be impossible to select the architects detail and not select the civil engineers data. I'm finding HDPro's precision to be horrible considering what this application is used for.
Sorry spent a bit to long on the soap box but it has been frustrating after spending so much for a poorly designed application.

This Warning message will appear when you import a library catalog file that was created for a program version newer than the one you are using. For example, if you are using Chief Architect X12 and try to import a .calibz file offered for Chief Architect X13, this warning message will display and the catalog will not be imported.
This Warning message will appear when you try to select and place a library item that has been imported into your library but is not designed for use in your program version. For example, CAD Blocks are objects supported in our Chief Architect programs but not in Home Designer. If a CAD Block is included in a catalog that is imported into Home Designer, the catalog will be imported. But, if you click on the CAD Block in the Library Browser, this Warning will display.
