Sib. 7.1: Cinematic Strings will not die !
Posted by randall999 - 11 Jul 10:39AM Hide picture When I use Cinematic Strings (through Kontakt 5 plugin) as VST in Sibelius 7.1, I experience a very strange thing that i never see with other VSTs (EWQL Symphonic Orchestra, Kontakt 4 VSL library, Ivory Pianos II, BEST Engine, etc-- this literally is happening only with Cinematic Strings using Kontakt 5)-- when I playback the score, I have no way to stop the playback, no way to pause the playback, without Sibelius being 'frozen' like an old 33-1/3 LP record album caught on repeat with a scratch on the album and bad needle that just keeps repeating the same note, until i press the 'p' key again. Is this an issue with Kontakt 5?

This is very annoying. I paid $300 for a nice string library VST (Cinematic Strings), and then discover it is annoying as heck to use in Sibelius for playback. I mean, if I have a 3 minute long score and try to pause one minute into playback, I get that frozen repeating note event that requires me to press 'p' again or hit the space bar to continue playback to the end of the score; i have no way to pause playback so I can return to editing, I am literally a prisoner and am forced to play through the entire score before Sibelius allows me to be into editing mode.

How can this be fixed? Is the problem with Sibelius, or Cinematic Strings, or both? Is there a workaround? One thing I am going to try today is a rewire of Sibelius to Cubase 5 and see what happens, but I do want to find a way to get Cinematic Strings to play nice in Sibelius, as it is a nice string library.

No problems if I do that. And I can load other libs (Session Strings, etc) into Kontakt 5 and have no issues. Or as you say, if Kontakt 5 has nothing loaded there is no issue. Seems this only happens if Cinematic Strings 2.0 is loaded into Kontakt 5. There must be some problem on the part of the maker of Cinematic Strings, I hope this can get fixed, this is not good, very annoying and time consuming when you have play through an entire composition to get Sibelius back into editing mode.

I just contacted support at cinematicstrings.com about this-- I will be sure to write back when I find out something, especially if there is a solution or workaround. Back to top Allthreads Re: Sib. 7.1: Cinematic Strings will not die !

For what purpose, to what end? I assume that would just toggle off notes, but then the problem of CS not playing nice in Sibelius still remains. Back to top Allthreads Re: Sib. 7.1: Cinematic Strings will not die !

Probably true, but did you try it?

Thank you, I received the patches for Cinematic Strings 2.0 from you in my email inbox, I will try them out tomorrow (late, been on the PC too long, time to fire up an episode of The Vampire Diaries and chill) and report back here and also by email to you D. So the problem of the Cinematic Strings 2.0 that will not die is solved (with the new patches), but the patches now created a new problem (hoping this new problem can be fixed with yet another patch, debug the existing patch?).

I applied the patches (copied the five .nki files over the existing .nki files after of course backing up the original .nki files). Started up Sibelius and a composition for violin using CS2 Violins II, loaded CS2 Violins II in Kontakt 5, pressed 'p' to start playback in Sibelius, and I got all staccato for what should have been legato. I opened up CS2 in Kontakt 5 and turned off all patches except Arco and the composition played legato as it should. I could then turn on all other patches (tremelo, trill, marcato, staccato...) EXCEPT Runs, and playback remained legato. Turning on the Runs patch, even if I then clicked the C0 for Arco in Kontakt, caused staccato playback of my legato composition.

The solution? Ugly. I can fix the above issue if, as one would do in a sequencer, i initiate my passage in Sibelius with a C0 note (the trigger for Arco), but that looks really really ugly in Sibelius, and I did not have to do this before the patch. I understand this might be a limitation of using CS2... okay i just went into Sibelius and clicked my C0 note (before my legato passage) and then RIGHT CLICKED it and there is an option to 'Hide or Show' then Hide, which I chose, and then the ugly C0 becomes ghosted (ever so slightly visible so you know it is there) if the bar is clicked/selected; and the C0 is completely invisible if the bar with the C0 is not selected. I can live with this, far better than having the previous patch where CS2 would not die until the entire composition was played through. Ultimately, CS2 is just doing what it was designed to do, using key note triggers (C0 for arco, G0 pizzacato, etc) just as one would do in a sequencer like Cubase.

I am kind of muddling around now trying to figure out how to turn on and off the various arco, pizz, tremelo, etc switches for CS2 in Sibelius-- perhaps the CS2 website could write up and show some tips on doing this?

For $15 that will be a no brainer if the soundset works with Sibelius 7.1 (Windows 7) and Cinematic Strings 2.0 (running in Kontakt 5). Can anybody (Peter?) confirm this?

I still would like to know how to manually use the keyswitches (C0, G0, C#0, etc), but a $15 soundset is a must if it will work. And I have never used a 3rd party soundset, this would be cheap way for me to try one out. Back to top Allthreads Re: Sib. 7.1: Cinematic Strings will not die !

The soundset website says it is for "Cinematic Strings v1.5+" so I am assuming it should work with CS 2.0? Back to top Allthreads Re: Sib. 7.1: Cinematic Strings will not die !
Posted by Jonathan Loving - 12 Jul 04:31PM Hide picture No, unfortunately. I'm not positive but that was probably written with the '+' prior to the release of Cinematic Strings 2. It should no longer be there, and in fact will be gone in the next few minutes. Back to top Allthreads Re: Sib. 7.1: Cinematic Strings will not die !
Posted by randall999 - 12 Jul 04:54PM Hide picture > No, unfortunately....

I was just about to order the soundset, glad i caught this post from you... so I hope some kind of notice will be put on the sibelius soundset project website that that soundset does not work with CS2. Darn, I really would have liked it to have worked, I was so anxious to buy that sounds set.

So I am back to having to figure out how to manually trigger pizz, marc, arco, trem, etc. Maybe the makers of CS2 will put some times on their site on how to do this with Sibelius. Back to top Allthreads Re: Sib. 7.1: Cinematic Strings will not die !
Posted by Peter Roos - 12 Jul 06:06PM Hide picture You could create your own soundset, or create a manual soundset. I've never quite understood how exactly to do that, or perhaps I didn't have the mental endurance for it, I am just happy that Jon Loving put together soundsets for all my major VSTs from Eastwest.

The 'revamped' series of soundsets are yet another improvement, by the way, not sure whether anyone else noticed but the user manuals are now better than ever, clearly laying out how to combine different soundsets, etc.
