Philippine American Business Improvement & Development
Phil Am BID
Mission: to connect commerce, culture and community
* The Philippine American Business Improvement and Development, better known as Phil Am BID, was founded in 2005. It is a diverse group of business leaders, entrepreneurs, professionals, community advocates, military officers, and public officials whose good character, integrity, leadership, kindness of heart, and strong love for the community unite them in their advocacy.
* Phil Am BID is committed to connecting culture, commerce, and community by creating business improvement districts that will be catalysts for positive change and revitalization for the businesses and the communities they belong to.
* Among the purposes of Phil Am BID is to establish a commercial, educational, cultural center in San Diego, California ( with 300,000 Filipino Americans -- the 3rd highest Filipino American populated city after San Francisco and Los Angeles, California) where people could congregate, converse, celebrate and showcase the history, art and beauty of Philippine culture and other ethnic groups.
* Phil Am BID aims for Plaza Pilipinas to be the hub from which will evolve a thriving and prosperous business and cultural district that will foster cultural, educational, and commercial collaboration across communities.
* Founding co-chair are Edna Consing Concepcion and Marilyn Calangi Mesina with the Charter Officers and Directors.
* In 2007, Phil Am BID initiated the "StarBlazer and TOP HATs Awards" to recognize outstanding achievement in professions and businesses coupled with a generous volunteerism in the true sense of "giving back". (The Outstanding Professional and High Achieving Teams) Judge Lillian Lim, the first Filipino American female Judge, was honored at her Retirement Celebration with the STARBlazer award.
* Phil Am BID, through its Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino, Jr. Yellow Ribbon Awards, honors public officials who have championed Filipino causes. Senator Benigno Aquino is one of the Philippines heroes whose assassination catapulted the Filipinos to rise arms against the 20 year Marcos dictatorial government.
The Gabriela Badge of Courage salutes valiant and fearless community advocacy while the Felipe Agoncillo "Global Filipino" Award is presented to individuals for outstanding diplomacy and representation of the Filipino.
The annual Awards have been highly successful.
