Flangedimensions are determined by the pipe size and the pressure class required for the application. Flanges are standardized according publications from organizations like ASME, MSS, API and others.

In general you need to specify the schedule (thickness) of the connected pipe when it is being butt welded to the flange. Socket welded and threaded connections is unaffected by wall thickness and should only require the OD.

MDC established its high standing in the vacuum components world after becoming one of the first licensed manufacturers of Varian's patented ConFlat metal-seal flange, known today to most MDC customers as the Del-Seal CF metal-seal flange.

Del-Seal CF flanges are classified as genderless flanges since the seal geometries on both mating flanges are identical. They are available in both rotatable and nonrotatable geometries with clearance or threaded bolt holes, and for standard tube sizes from .25 to 14.0 inches in diameter. MDC discourages resealing a Del-Seal CF flange with a previously used metal gasket and strongly recommends the installation of a new metal gasket every time a flange is fastened. When flange fasteners are tightened to their specified sealing torques a gap will remain between the mating flanges, which is normal and desirable. Tightening the flanges metal-to-metal is not necessary to achieve a UHV hermetic seal.

OFE copper, which stands for "Oxygen Free Electronic or Electrolytic grade Copper", is the metal gasket material of choice for most UHV sealing applications. For special applications which preclude the use of pure copper, various metal gasket materials including nickel, aluminum and silver plated copper are also available.

Flanges are commonly used to connect valves into pipework making it easier for removal and maintenance. There are many common flange standards and flanges within the same standard can etiher be flat (commonly cast iron, ductile iron) or raised face (commonly cast steel and stainless steel). Below is a reference table for critical flange dimensions to help identify what standard you have.

We get this question a lot from customers who are new to piping industry. Steel pipe flanges are classified as per ASME B16.5 standard. The pressure rating of flange ranges from 150# to 2500#. The term "lb", "class" and "#" are used interchangeably to designate the pressure rating of the flange. The fact is that 150 lb has no relation to 150 psi and so does the 300 or 600 lb does not correlate to 300 or 600 psi pressure rating. Pressure rating of the flange depends on the material (A105, stainless, nickel alloy etc.), the heat treat condition and pressure "class". Here we will use the term "class" to NOT confuse it with pressure "rating". So what is class 150 flange or ASME B16.5 class 150 flange, as the question raised by many customers.

Trupply has made a video using slip on flange to clarify the difference between different pressure classes of a flange. The video uses 2 inch slip on flange as an example. The table below shows the difference between 2 inch flange of class 150, class 300 and class 600.

Ansi B16 5 Class 900 Flange Dimensions are according to the ANSI B16.5 standard which covers flanges from inches to 24 inches in nominal sizes. The 900 Lb Flange Dimensions include the wall thicknesses ranging from 7/8 inches to 5 inches and the outer diameters ranging from 4 inches to 41 inches. The diameter of the raised face, diameter of hub at base and welding neck all have different value ranges. There are also different pressure classes such as the Ansi 900 Lb Flange Dimensions which can withstand 900lb of force.

The pressure classes range from 150 through 2500. The class 900 is a high pressure capable class. The materials used to make these flanges also differ such as austenitic stainless steel, carbon steel, duplex steel and alloy steel materials. The class 900 lb flange dimensions vary with the material type as well. There are high tensile material that are used for high strength requiring applications. The 8 900 lb flange dimensions are used accordingly in pipelines to select the type, class and material of the flanges. The face type of the flanges vary as ring type joint, flat face or raised face. The raised face flanges have separate dimensions for the raised face. The 900 lbansi flange dimensions are used in oil and gas, petroleum, petrochemical, power generation and in general corrosive application pipelines.

This standard covers pressure-temperature ratings, materials, dimensions, tolerances, marking, testing, and methods of designating openings for pipe flange and flanged fittings. ASME B16.5 standard covers Steel Pipe Flanges and Flanged Fittings from NPS 1/2 through NPS 24 Metric/Inch in pressure class 150 to class 2500.

A flanged joint is composed of separate and independent, although interrelated components: the flanges, gasket, and bolting, which are assembled by another influence, the assembler. Proper controls must be exercised in the selection and application for all these elements to attain a joint that has acceptable leak tightness. Special techniques, such as controlled bolt tightening, are described in ASME PCC-1

The rated temperature corresponding to the rated pressure is refers to the temperature of the pressure vessel of the flange and flange fittings. This temperature is generally the same as the temperature of the stored liquid.

Whether flange joints are used at high or low temperatures, leakage due to external forces and moments generated by the connected piping or equipment should be considered. To prevent leakage, pipe flanges and flanged fittings should avoid the application of severe external loads and sharp thermal gradients.

Application at temperatures in the creep range will result in decreasing bolt loads as relaxation of flanges, bolts, and gaskets takes place. Flanged joints subjected to thermal gradients may likewise be subject to decreasing bolt loads. Decreased bolt loads diminish the capacity of the flanged joint to sustain loads effectively without leakage. At temperatures above 200C (400F) for Class 150 and above 400C (750F) for other class designations, flanged joints may develop leakage problems unless care is taken to avoid imposing severe external loads, severe thermal gradients, or both.

Flanged joints and flanged fittings may be subjected to system hydrostatic tests at a pressure of 1.5 times the 38C (100F) rating rounded off to the next higher 1 bar (25 psi)

increment. Testing at any higher pressure is the responsibility of the user, taking into account the requirements of the applicable code or regulation.

(2) Flanges and flanged fittings shall be manufactured as one piece in accordance with the applicable material specification. Assembly of multiple pieces into the finished product by welding or other means is not permitted by this Standard

The material of the ring gasket shall comply with ASME B 16.20. The user is responsible for selecting gasket materials that are suitable for operating conditions, can withstand bolt loads, and do not cause cracking.

ASME B16.5 flange dimensions including different pressure ratings for weld neck flange, slip on flange, blind flange, reducing flange, socket weld flange, threaded flange, view below for more details.

In order to determine compliance with this standard, where a fixed effective number is required where the limits, maximum and minimum values are specified, rounding shall be in accordance with the method defined in ASTM Practice E29.
