So, I got 2 friends to get Warhammer 3 and both had a decision paralysis. Obviously they wanted to try the Empire, so I told them the Empire is actually very hard not sure why the devs listed it as "recommended first campaign" because it's anything but that. Then they wanted to try Kislev because they played as Kislev in the Prologue campaign, again, I told them that the Tutorial faction is not the recommended first campaign, in fact it's very difficult, and the easiest of them, Boris Ursus, is the one they have to unlock.
I'm not saying easy to play for an experienced player, with or without exploits, I'm saying easy for a new player (make lots of mistakes both on the map and in buildings & wrong army composition, bad tech tree, that sort of stuff).
- Miao Ying & Zhao Ming. (Both strong recommended first campaign in IE & RoC. Both are easy in both RoC & IE. And in fact the brother is easier than the sister in both campaigns, except for that initial capture capital city in 1 of the campaign. Zhao Ming starts in a worse city in one of them for some reason, but after that initial hiccups, they are both easy, still, would be better if Zhao Ming would start with the capital city and have to conquer the other in both campaigns, way more new player friendly, and having 2 lords new player friendly in the same faction makes for great co-op)
- Volkmar the Grim IE (the actual easy Empire campaign. I know the Empire is a fan-favorite, but WH3 Karl Franz is really difficult. Which veterans of the series love, the real empire experience, but at least don't recommend it as a "recommended first campaign" if its a difficult campaign)
- Khorne RoC & IE (another base game faction that's easy in both campaigns. What I do love about the Cathay/Khorne duo is that if you play Cathay you're going to play defensive, play safe, have stable and structured formations. Khorne is literally the opposite of that, and new players are usually at the extreme based on their personality. Cathay is build an empire, Khorne is just fight)
- Orion IE (good new player friendly, safe and secure, very powerful army, Orion is the least complicated of the 4, there's a lot of low risk and isolationism in playing Wood Elves. My biggest issue with them is actually that -8% upkeep cost for Orion's army & -4% upkeep cost for other armies FOR EVERY FACTION YOU ARE AT WAR WITH. This literally calls for an exploit. Just make it a baseline -20% upkeep cost for Orion's army & -10% upkeep cost for other armies like you were at war with 2.5 factions all the time. Balance it out to remove the exploit, making him the "cheap units" wood elf would make him even more beginner friendly)
- Be'lakor IE (probably bronze if the others were gold & silver. Out of all recommended new players, I would say this is more like a honorable mention because he is a bit more complicated than the others mentioned but he's very strong. He has a lot of freedom in his campaign, and if you want to be the bad guys, if you want to be the baddie, this is as bad as it gets. Not to mention, AND THIS SHOULD BE MENTIONED IN THE FACTION EFFECTS BECAUSE THERE'S NO WAY YOU CAN KNOW WITHOUT PLAYING - Be'lakor and Archaon the Everchosen can confederate the other lords of chaos. This is big, too big not to be mentioned. I would say Archaon the Everchosen is a bit strong & a bit less complicated than Be'lakor at the same time, but he needs DLC were as Be'lakor is base game)
Stay at Reikland until you get to tier 3 altdorf, build cavalry+workshop building, then pumping 3-5 outrider w/ gren launcher for every stack. The rest is spearmen w/ shield, or just spearmen for cost effective, 2-3 handgunner for large monster should be enough, 1 mortar to draw enemy in.
Outrider w/ gren launcher is like mini version of helstorm battery that stay effective throughout the match. They're high rating in auto resolve. Or even in manual battle, they can skirmishing, and then shoot over your frontline disgarding the terrain.
Of course they wanted to try the Empire - this has nothing to do with you op it's more for those who to this day deny the Empire is probably the most popular faction among any new players - because it is the only faction that truly appeals to a broad cross-section of people who may not be that familiar with the game. It's the only faction that is even remotely intuitive to understand from the start and it's appealing. It's basically the HRE in a fantasy section. Or it could have been had it been better designed.
Having said that your friend clearly had WH I and II otherwise no Empire and no Tyrion... In my opinion the failure of CA to design a better Empire campaign for WH3 but even more the omission of the Empire (and I would argue Tyrion) from the factions available to people who only bought WH3 has much and more to do with the comparative lack of success of the game - in particular the enormous rate of abandonment of the game among people who did buy it. I don't know what they were thinking regarding new customer/player experience, but you would have to be fully wrapped in the bubble that these forums or reddit are to believe factions such as Chaos factions or Kislev and Cathay would be even remotely more appealing (and repayable) for new players than the HRE I mean the Empire...
The one high elf faction I would not recommend to new players is alarielle. Don't get me wrong, she's a strong lord and faction but having to deal with the blood voyage attacks on top of everything else when you are new to the game as your first campaign just feels like it would make it harder for you.
1. Grand Cathay:
Zhao Ming - other then the small hurdle of getting hanyu port cathay is a strong faction and zhao doesn't have to worry about the bastion early. You can carry most of the mid game with units from your tier 3 barracks (jade helbards, jade warrior crossbows) and tier 3 gunpowder units (crane gunners, grand cannons) They have a good ecconomy and can make a lot of money from their caravans, the new harmony system is much much simpler then before, and you do not have a lot of really tough enemies immediately next to you.
