Welcome to our Google Group! Since we are not exclusive to or affiliated with any one animal rights organization, we decided a group forum format will work best to communicate amongst each other. You can post questions or discussion topics here (scroll down), message our members, or receive group email announcements. You can also engage and interact on our Blog which has a link to our Google Calendar of events, on Facebook, or on Twitter.

We are the Portland Animal Welfare Advocates (PAWA): regular, everyday people who live in the Portland, Oregon & surrounding area who advocate for the ethical treatment of animals. This is not a radical "all or nothing" type of group-we are a grassroots, active group of people coming together to do something to help animals. If you support the overall welfare of animals, strive for a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle, & want some company as you lend your voice, volunteer time, & energy to make a difference for the treatment of animals in our city & beyond, then we hope you have found a home with our group!

We are here sharing our backgrounds, connections, convictions, experiences, resources, gifts, & talents as passionate people all in an effort to improve the lives of animals. There are so many aspects to consider when it comes to animal welfare, including their current use for food, clothing, entertainment, sport, & experimentation. We all might not agree on every singular issue or every established animal rights organization that we work with from time to time, that's ok. We encourage you to join us for the activities that speak to you, or suggest ones you are interested in, so that we have a positive community of people working together to get something accomplished.

Right now, our group is growing. Thank you for being a part of it. We are not just about advocating for a healthier, happier human-animal relationship in the world around us, but also about our member relationships, so we have social events as well to enjoy the animal-friendly camaraderie. Our founding members-Summer, Shawn, Melissa, Colin, Corina, & Paige-look forward to working with you for animals out & about in PDX!

*How does the color coding work on our Google Calendar, you may be wondering? To make it easier to determine which events you would like to participate in at a glance, we have created the following classifications (please keep them in mind when you add your own event to share & make sure to RSVP):

1.Bold Blue = Protests/Demonstrations by other organizations we are participating in, or ones we organize ourselves at a specific location

2.Blue = Development (ex. PAWA "Making-Meatless-Lasagna Night" with recipes or PAWA "Pictures of Pets in Action Day" to be shared afterwards)

3.Turquoise = Leafletting at a specific location with materials provided by other organizations, or ones we design for PAWA

4.Green = Tabling at a specific location (ex. a booth reserved at a local fair, festival, or show)

5.Bold Green = Education (ex. going to hear a speaker about animal rights, book signing, or watching a documentary)

6.Yellow = Meals/Shopping (ex. meeting for dinner at a Vegetarian restaurant or buying from a Vegan bake sale)

7.Orange = Volunteering at/for an Animal Sanctuary

8.Red = Volunteering at/for an Animal Shelter, Clinic, or Rescue Group

9.Bold Red = Meetings/other Work Party (ex. painting signs to use at a future event)

10.Purple = Entertainment/other Social Gatherings (ex. going to a concert that benefits an animal organization)

11.Gray = Vigils

12. None = Activities from Home (ex. alerts about petitions to sign, charities to donate to, or misc.)
