Is something wrong with my netflix or is this a problem everyone has? I'll be watching an American or English speaking show or movie and someone will say something in another language that should have subtitles but netflix doesn't seem to have them hard coded into the content. Is there a way to fix this because it makes some movies or episodes completely un-watchable.
Its two or three years since the topic has been raised in this forum but thought I'd mention again. Very disappointed to find that we rented a film from Talktalk last night which had no subtitles. I'm profoundly deaf and rely on subtitles which live TV provides. Our TV and YouView box are permanently set up to show subtitles so I'm satisfied there was no technical hitch. Talktalk have agreed to refund the rental however the problem with their rented films remain. All the advosor could tell me on the 'live chat' was that most of their rented films have subtitles....not so. We checked out a further 5+ films to watch including quite recent ones such as Bridget Jones' baby but still no subtitles available...... In his frustrations with Talktalk my partner has just opened a contract this morning with Now TV and can watch a wide range of films including the one we rented last night off Talktalk, and all the other 5 we'd planned to rent and at a fraction of the cost - and all show subtitles!! (we've double-checked). I'm all for a competitive market, but I'd far rather just deal with one provider, Talktalk. Why oh why can't Talktalk provide the subtitled version of the films they rent out? This could be a deal breaker for us as I rely on subtitles and am a big supporter of Action On hearing Loss 'Subtitle it' campaign. Well Talktalk and community - what are your views?
I find the white no subtitles on box office movies really hard. I am the only member of my family with hearing difficulties. We often hire movies as a family. They laugh, I dont. They know the plot, I don't. They hear the vital clue to the mystery, I don't. Pretty much all recent movies have subtitles if you buy them. I don't understand why this can't apply to talk talk too. It's quite discriminating really
Some of the movies, especially the on demand movies from Sky On Demand do not always have subtitles. This was queried by other customers recently directly with Sky themselves who more or less said that it is not always financially viable for them to provide.
We do show subtitles with titles if they are provided to us but do not always have control over this. I do agree there should be more movies with subtitles and our teams are always trying to improve the availability of these options but ultimately these can only be shown if provided by the respective broadcasters.
We ordered No Time to Die last night. I was very disappointed to find that it had no subtitles. The sound track was not great and was a bit too "realistic" (i.e. mumberly) - I could only understand about half of it. For 15 I expected better. I think anything on Sky Store should clearly state whether it has subtitles or not.
Sky store movie don't have subtitles at all only one or two have subtitles...it's not good enough all movies must have subtitles every single movies... why making so difficult for deaf people's like me can't watch movie don't have subtitles!!! It's not deaf awareness!!
I'm fed up of this. Just bought Elvis on sky store to keep and no subtitles. This is dreadful discrimination against hard of hearing. I'm not heard of haring bit both of my parents are, I invited them to come watch the movie and no subtitles. What is going on??? @skyA I want a refund and I need you to give me a date of when you will be supplying subtitles to all movies. Ridiculous and very bad form and so unprofessional.
I wrote a long para and it disappeared. So again:. Agree. I have to watch No Tme to Die on ITV tonight . Bought months ago, not again. Sky should do better. I wear hearing aids and cannot understand all. Even Boxsets have no subtitles?! I watched State of Play this weekend and missed key dialogue. Not impressed.
The Apriti Cinema Festival, also known as the Open Cinema Festival, hosts a film under the stars every night at 9:45 p.m. The festival invites special guests, the public and different cultures to the courtyard to enjoy the international films. 23 of 40 nights have film screenings in English or with English subtitles. The festival is free to all attendees, but has limited availability each night.
For one, accents vary and crap like that. For two, I don't watch movies with the volume up like i'm at a rock concert. And for three, I don't care about mistranslated subtitles in my native language - at least for languages I do understand. Please do full subtitles in english.
Subtitles are great. They help viewers follow along with the dialogue in films and TV shows that are in a language that they don't understand, allowing us to enjoy content from all over the world. And let's be honest, subtitles can also come in handy for situations like quiet late-night viewing or following the play-by-play from sports commentators on TVs in noisy bars.
September 24 Tulpan (Germany/Kazakhstan/Poland/Russia/Switzerland 2008) 100 min.Kazakh and Russian with English subtitles [IMAGE]MUN Cinema exists to showcase movies like this. TULPAN is an amazing, Cannes award-winning comedy set in Kazakhstan. In the arid landscape of Central Asia we have life and love and more realism than any film you have seen in the last ten years. We are deep in the world of sheepherders, a culture that understands the intimate relation of man and animal and life and death. Central to the characters is Asa who arrives in their midst after having served on waterin the navy, and as far from the dusty horizontal plains of bleating sheep and hungry men as one can be. All Asa wants now is a cosy yurt to call his own, and the right woman to keep it clean and bear him a family. Tulpan is the name of the woman he courts in a set of gestures that form the heart of the story. But the real heart of the film may well be the scene in which a lamb is borna real lamb, in real time, bleats and messy fluids included. This film is about as close to nature as many of us will ever get. If this blurb makes you want to give the film a pass you should know you are making a grave mistake. This is the one time where followingthe sheep will give you great pleasure.
What are open captions (subtitles, OC)? OC is on-screen text dialogue. OC lets deaf and hard of hearing people enjoy movies the same way as hearing people do. Closed captions (CC) require use of equipment. Given a choice, most CC equipment users will choose open captions because CC equipment has multiple issues, so many (including discomfort) that we put the list at the bottom of this petition.**
Captions also benefit many others, such as kids learning to read and people learning English as a second language (longer list at bottom***), as discussed in the research article "Video Captions Are for Everyone." Plus, many people who do not have hearing loss enjoy watching streamed movies and TV with the subtitles on. The majority of people who use captions are NOT deaf or hard of hearing. These hearing people are very receptive to the idea of OC in movie theaters.
While a growing number of theaters are willing to offer OC, usually only poorly attended time slots are offered. (Then the OC may be blamed for the low attendance without considering the times and dates.) Theaters resist offering OC during higher attendance times like Friday and Saturday nights, at a time when demand for subtitles is growing among young moviegoers. Your signature demonstrates to both theaters and legislators how much demand and support there is for OC in movie theaters!
