Hi, I'm using AutoCAD 2016 on Windows 10. I'm having a problem whereby new drawings open in different windows (see image "Actual Configuration"), but I'd like them to open in different tabs (see image "Desired Configuration").
What I found is that I do not have to set the taskbar or the SDI. All I do is click on the windows logo in the bottom right hand side select all programs, Select AutoCAD folder and select the AutoCAD application and this launches a new instant of AutoCAD. All I have to do is open the file within that Instant. If I want another instant I repeat the steps above. I don't go through the File Explorer other wise it will open in the opened AutoCAD.
Unless living with the TASKBAR variable set to zero is okay, go ahead and try resetting AutoCAD to defaults and if that doesn't help, try uninstalling and reinstalling it. If reinstalling doesn't fix it, then I would suggest removing and reinstalling the .NET Framework and Visual C++. .NET especially governs most of how AutoCAD displays its windows. Here are a couple articles on reinstalling .NET and C++:
He normally has multiple files open at the same time, and views them at the same time by making the windows smaller and dragging them into position. When he is doing this, it looks like there are multiple windows open in the background, see image attached.
He also has 2 monitors, and drags the windows onto the other screen to help view more than one at the same time. Since the problem above occurred, he can only seem to use the one screen, which is the one with the main CAD window open on.
I am awfully sorry @dave.mathieson, in deed AutoCAD 2011 is officially not supported anymore - so the missing entry in the recommended Hardware is justified. So, if the last thing happening to this computer was a windows update I suggest you run a repair or fresh installation of AutoCAD.
Did you contact Dell Support yet? Do that next. Then Microsoft's User Forums to see if this is indeed an update issue or not (important you actually find out ASAP) -us/windows/forum?sort=LastReplyDate&dir=Desc&tab=All&status=all&mod...
Is it possible, if looking at (say) 2 windows of the same area, to somehow lock them together to the same level of zoom and then, by panning around in one window, the same area pans around in the other window (eg displayed side by side). Similarly, if one zooms in/out in one window, the other window (for the same area) zooms in and out?
This avoids having to zoom in/out in one window, selecting the other window and zooming in/out and then finding because the two windows aren't at the same level of zoom, you have to adjust a bit, then (wait, too much) adjust it out a bit, panning to the left, changing windows, panning that one to the left, but now its not panning the same amount so you have to pan it back to the right, but now the zoom is wrong, so select the other window and moving that and oh wait... what a waste of time... (get the idea?
It would be nice if you could somehow co-ordinate the views so the same area is in 2 (or more) windows, locking them, then whatever movement you do in one window happens in other instances of the same area.

I am currently creating a windows form application that needs to open autocad .I have done it for Autocad 2014.Is there any way we can do this task workable not just for single version but for any version. In addition to this I have created dll for 2014 which worked fine.By altering the references acmgd.dll and acdbmgd.dll i got it worked on 2007 too.Is there any way except this to create a dll orking in all version. Thanks in advance.
Hi Pascal. The reference script works between 3dsmax and rhino, not autocad. How it works under the hood i dont really know though.
On the user side of things i just assign some command in 3ds/rhino to copy and paste the files.
I have no idea what a third party bool is I am using windows 10 cut and paste clipboard. Nothing can be moved between the two programs using this method. If you could explain how you are able to achieve it I would be most grateful.
@Jraby we are currently also looking at this in our business. We do not use autocad but produce and edit .DWG files in specialist cad software. Currently testing only using teams but if we right click on the .DWG file within teams then choose the option to open in app the file opens in your default .DWG software or viewer. It works best however only if we choose to sync the folder first.
Then.... when you when into 3D view mode, you'd see your doors in 3d, your windows in 3d (at the correct height off of the floor), the walls / partitions would be automatically trimmed with those doors and windows correctly inserted.
