Greetings to all of you, from Paul's Grains!!

The ground is covered with snow from our first snowfall which arrived yesterday. We only received about 2" of snow, but it was enough to make the roads icy and made staying home even more inviting. Nevertheless, we are planning to venture out at the end of the week, Saturday, Nov. 22, (and possibly Friday if we are able to get everything ready in time) and have a booth at the Downtown Des Moines Indoor Farmers Market at the Capital Square Building. We will be there from 9 to 1. We will be located on the second floor. If you take the escalator up from the first level and walk straight ahead, you will find our booth before too long.

We are thankful that we had all our crops in before the snow arrived. The transition between a beautiful, colorful, and warm fall to extremely cold winter temperatures happened overnight. Four young, energetic cousins from Oregon arrived the first part of October and spent about 2 1/2 weeks with us. They gave us a real boost with all the fall activities. They helped dig the potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, and beets in the garden, gleaned the apple orchard, cleaned out the barn and chicken house, etc. They also helped us pull the carpet out of our living room to reveal a nice wood floor underneath that we didn't know was there. It needs some work before it is really serviceable, but with the extra help, we made some good progress on it. We didn't keep them working all the time. They enjoyed filming a play with our family and we had quite a few evenings filled with music. One evening we invited another 6 players in and had a full room of instruments--violins, guitars, mandolins, banjo, upright bass, and accordion. Those of us who weren't playing enjoyed singing along. It was pretty quiet after everyone headed home.

It will be getting even quieter here next week as our oldest daughter at home at the moment will be relocating to Des Moines, IA. She has a job working with Hope Ministries. They reach out to the homeless and those that are struggling to find their way through life. She has worked there two weeks already and really enjoys the people she is working with. Her new job is close to where our older daughter and family live, so she is looking forward to spending more time with them in the months ahead. The house gets bigger and bigger as they move out one by one. We are looking forward to having everyone home for Thanksgiving. The Lord has blessed us immensely and we are so grateful for all the love He bestows upon us, even for the trials that have drawn us closer to Him as we are reminded that without Him we can do nothing.

We were reminded of His love just a few weeks ago. We were planning to take our 8-passenger van to pick up a piano and deliver it to our daughter's house. We got to the end of our lane and smelled some smoke. We got out and looked under the hood to see if we could see what was going on. Before long we realized that something was burning and water wasn't putting it out. We got fire extinguishers, but they weren't enough. We got back out of the way and eventually it became a smoldering inferno. We are thankful the piano wasn't in it. We are also thankful that it was a warm, still day so the fire wasn't in danger of spreading to the fields and that our lives weren't endangered. It was a blessing that it was close to home so we weren't stranded somewhere. It wasn't a van that we drive often, and it was older, so the monetary loss wasn't as great as it could have been. We will miss having the larger van when we need it ocassionally, but we know the Lord knows our needs and He took care of us through the fire and He will supply our needs in the future, too.

Enough rambling for now, back to business!! If you would like to place an order to be picked up at the market on Nov. 22nd, give us a call (641) 476-3373 or send us an email (sp...@heartofiowa.net). The sooner we receive your orders, the sooner we can fill them and hopefully avoid the last minute rush.

Blessings,

Teresa (for the Paul family)
