Friday night I went to see Paul and Storm with Jonathan Coulton at Mo Pitkin's House of Satisfaction in New York. It was my frist time seeing P&S in ages. I was very happy to hear so much new material. Kudos for Bob and Tom applying the whip to Paul and Storm and getting them to write.

If you haven't seen Jonathan Coulton put him at the top of your must see list. If you like Paul and Storm or DVN or Eric Schwartz or Christine Lavin you'll like Jonathan. He's hysterical and he's a nerd! He even has a song about the Mandelbrot Set. For those of you with more refined tastes he has a song about celebrating spring by having sex outdoors. Just go see him.

I was talking to Storm and Paul (Why does Paul always have to come first?) before the show. I told them that I really shouldn't be there as I had to prepare a final but instead I was seeing them on Friday, Dar Williams on Saturday, and the GrooveLily Musical, Striking 12 on Sunday. Paul said that I should just work that into a word problem on the test. So I did.
Paul and Storm have two CDs. Opening Band sells for $15 and News to Us sells for $20. At a concert they sell 45 CDs for $680. How many copies of each CD did they sell?

Now that really isn't quite the question I wanted as it is inaccurate. I didn't think my students could solve the problem with the prices correct. Lets see if you can.
Paul and Storm have 2 CDS, Opening Band and News to Us. Each CD sells for $15. If you buy both of them you get the two CDS plus the limited edition rubber band holding them together for the bargain price of $25 (Can you tell I was doing merch for them?). If I sold 30 copies of Opening Band and 42 copies of News to Us and collected $1000 how many rubbered banded two packs did I sell?
Namaste,
Gordon

Hello everyone,

1) Keep the stories coming; they make me happy. :)

2) Make to sure to tell Gordon that he's both funny-looking and a silly goose.

3) Gordon, my darling, when I tell you not to tell someone something, that actually means DON'T tell them....

Happy holidays, people. :)

So I told Paul that I called him a dumbass. At least I didn't tell Storm what you called him.

Namaste,
Gordon

Gordon, that is an disproportionate response. Lucky you I don't have Katyushas right about now, huh?

And besides, you're funny-looking, who's going to believe you? :)

Give the lady a cigar!

But wait, you didn't show your work so I'm not sure if I can give you full credit!

WHAT???!!! Are you implying I cheated??? You are obviously a very
astute teacher. (My husband and I worked on it together...creating
another question: "How many old people does it take to solve a simple
math problem?")

I could post a scan of our worksheet, but only if we get the $1,000.

Isn't the respect of the Paul and Stormtroopers worth more than $1,000?

That is a sad commentary on people's values. Personally I think my respect is worth $5100, the greatest gift one person can give another.

Gordon

My respect is worth more than Gordon's....

Perhaps I am the list's resident Aussie dummy.... (No, I KNOW I am!)

Why is your respect worth $5100, and not $5000 or even $5200? What's the extra hundred for? How did you figure this out??!?!?!

It's a reference to the Sitcom Taxi; I was wondering if anyone would get it. When Latka and Simka were getting married they had to pass a test. One of the questions was; "What is the greatest gift one person can give another." Simka blurts out, "Fifty One Hundred Dollars." That was the correct answer.

Namaste,
Gordon

Wow. That is a pretty obscure quote, at least in this household. I
think we stopped watching Taxi when Latka had bigger parts...we found
him too irritating.

If you had said something about the Pinedale Shopping Mall being bombed
by live turkeys...THAT I would remember!
